I'm about to buy a Benchmade Axis folder and have narrowed it down to between three choices:

BM710 w/ Alum Scales

BM 730BT Ares

BM 942BT

I can get all of them new for about $120 or so so cost isn't an object at all. Help me decide.

Welcome to the forums, SSS.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again--and I think lots of people will back me up here--the 710 is one of the finest production folders ever made. You simply cannot go wrong with it unless your city has a 3.5" length limit and you plan on respecting it.

The other two are very nice knives, but I think the ergonomics, blade profile, and blade length of the 710 set it apart.

Well, I carry on me 710 HSSR with Al scales, my own thing + 940 SBT

Overall 710 is a better utility knife, but depending on the place you may prefer 940, looks more innocent.

They are all nice knives. My own personal preferences - I like metal handles, don't like black plastic - led me to the Osborne.

Good luck!

i've only held the osborne but it felt like magic for those few minutes.

550 Griptilian. I wouldn't have believed how good this knife was until I actually handled it myself. I cannot say enough good things about this knife - it's a truly awesome utility blade for daily carry.

What are your intended, or "normal" uses for the knife?
Those are three very different blades.

The design of the 710 is really hard to beat.

If I were going to design my own, custom folder for utility and self defense, I'd start with the 710 and about the only thing I'd do differently would be to make the blade out of slightly thicker stock and grind the tip just a bit stouter.

It is an excellent overall package with a very trustworthy locking system.

Super.

kevin,i agree man!
i got a 940 after the show, but cant get my mind off the 550. very nice, especially for what they cost.

you have them in stock?

the 940 is nice. non threatening, very smooth action, good steel (my october KOTM is 154 cm)

benchmade makes great knives, pick one, youll like it.

My vote is for the 730. More "sheeple" friendly than the 710, but still a great knife. Any of these are great pieces, so you cannot go wrong.
