I've been toying around with this multi-purpose large fixed blade idea for a few weeks now. It's inspired by the historical Italian cinquedea short sword/big knife, but with more utilitarian features. It would work well as a chopper, and could be comfortably pinch-gripped like a chef's knife for food prep or controlled cuts with the secondary "point" of the base of the blade. Blade would be approximately 12", keeping it within the historical range for a small cinquedea, and would be of approximately machete thickness, with a convex primary edge. The back-edge would merely be a swedge to improve penetration.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Improvements? I think this would be one fun blade in the woods or at home. :D

Yup! That was exactly the idea! :D Sheath setup would probably be set up for diagonal small-of-the-back carry, mimicking the carry method of originals as well. :)

I like it, as long as the backside of blade by the handle is well rounded.

I'd have the base flares of the blade radiused for comfort. :)

I always wanted to make something like that but patina'd and distressed.

Does anyone have any suggestions for someone who could do this up without it costing an arm and a leg? My main limitation right now is being in college, so unfortunately that means I have to watch the budget! :D

Well, it might be a perfect match, but maybe you could modify a Cold Steel Barong machete into something pretty close to your design. It would be a cheap start at least.

I actually have one of those. :)

I understand that custom work demands a certain level of expense. What I mean by "on a budget" means "on a budget by custom-work standards." :)

Oh well in that case, I think one of the makers here on the board would be more than happy to help you out. Stomper (JK knives) is always willing to work from sketches and I think Bryan Breeden will as well.

Stomper can only do up to a 13" OAL. :)

I'll give Bryan a look though.

Dave Farmer knocks out some pretty big pieces and his prices are great !
