I'd appreciate your opinions regarding the Buck Strider ML (890SPX spear point) and FB (890TX tanto) style knives. I think it's an interesting (maybe even unexpected) collaboration.

No-one else seems to have any opinion so I'll throw in what little I do know. I'll start by stating that I have neither the knives you list, but have recently treated myself to the 888 Solution. If steel quality and build are of any concern to you, stop worrying. My 888 is a solid as a rock and I do not expect to call on the warranty for anything. My knife has already seen a couple of trips out into the field and has proven to be all I expected. It's a pleasure to use and to to own. I didn't like the military style sheath, but soon made my own out of leather (I'd love to post a picture but cannot do so!). This is just a personal choice, and the supplied sheath would serve well if you liked it. I found the final grind of the edge to be a little obtuse for my tastes, but a spell with some DMT gear soon re-profiled it to a finer edge, and now it's just about the sharpest tool in the box (If only the same could be said for me! *LOL*)
As I'm not going to be using the knife for it's intended "tactical" usage, but as a field knife, I might not be giving you the sort of info you want, but I think you'll be paying a lot more money before you find a stronger, better quality knife than the Buck Striders.

Thanks for the information. I appreciate it.

I went ahead and purchased both the Strider ML and FB. Their steel (420HC) is, at least in some opinions, a lower quality than that used in the 888 Solution (ATS-34, I think). Still, I'm thinking the BOS heat treating should take care of any major issues with the steel. I'm finding that the black oxide coating wears easily resulting in some cosmetic blemishes. Still, the blades themselves seem to be holding up quite well.

Why would Buck use a relatively speaking low end steel in a knife that isn't cheap? I read the review in Tactical Knives and seem to recall that they were in the 200-300 dollar range. Would something like 440C be that much more expensive (or better for that matter)?

You might want to do some nosing around in the back pages here. I believe that Strider did the testing on these and found the 420HC did a real good job with Bos heattreating. I also believe TAD had them for around $180. will do some looking my self.

Congratulations, guy g! Now all you need to do, to be a link pro, is practise, practise...you know the rest. ;)

I'm very happy with all my Buck Strider colaberations the fixed and the folders I like to modify the 880 881 series but they rock I do prefer the ATS-34 though personally.
Peace

Thanks for the information. I had tried to search, but, well, my searches don't always seem to find whats in here. I sometimes have better luck googling my search and including bladeforums.

Shann, the biggest thing I did when I first joined was to scan through all of the prior pages of the Buck forum. Buck is my main interest and when a question is raised, it will jog the old memory bank that I've read it some place here. Then I go look for it. When searching ,I also try to limit my request to one word if at all posible. In this case, I typed in 'strider'.

You are right. If you use one word it can work pretty good. I haven't read the bucks forum although I've done the same thing with the HI forum.

Thanks.
