Hi guys, id like to ask a question. I am currently talking to a blacksmith here in my country (Philippines) for a custom chefs knife. Id like to ask if he is overcharging or just about right since his works are quite good.

He is charging $20 per inch of cutting edge using 1095 steel (hand forged)

I wanted an 8inch knife so he wants $150

Hope you can help me out...

Sounds to me like a very reasonable sum considering what some Chef’s Knives sell for and if it is in fact fine work then it’s a bargain in my opinion.

@dawnkind thanks a lot! I was just thinking if its reasonable for the material used which is 1095 steel. Ive read a lot about 1095 steel, which they say is common steel so just wondrin maybe price greatly depends on the labor done.
 
when you buy a custom knife, the bulk of what you're paying for is the maker's labour, which is usually not enough for the knife maker to live off of
