I'm looking into the possibility of trading a couple of knifes for a firearm (Savage Model 64 .22 LR or similar rifle). Where do I even start? More than likely this will be a trade done across state lines. Is it just a simple matter of the other party shipping the rifle from one FFL to another? What sort of fees should I expect form the FFL on my end? Any required permits or paperwork? Also, I should likely mention I live in North Carolina.

Have the private party ship the firearm to your local FFL with a copy of their driver's license enclosed. Confirm your FFL of choice will accept firearms from a private party. Then follow the process just like you would with a normal retail purchase.

I have purchased a lot of rifles and shotguns over the years for a $10 transfer fee but, today things run $20 per transaction whether one or up to five - yes I did 5 firearms on one transaction record once. :D

North Carolina.

Oops, I see you are both in North Carolina. You don't need an FFL in most states, TODAY, to complete a "face-to-face" transfer. :o

Various political groups have tried to change that at the national level but, the last attempt in congress failed. Verify local laws first.

I'll echo what Sid Post said with regards to checking the pricing with your FFL. I had one which I have used a few times in the past. Previously, their pricing was around $25 to receive or transfer out (if skyhorse sees this, no this was not Brian...although he still remains a great guy to deal with ). I recently went back to this FFL to check their current selection out. Their prices have gone up in general and were now wanting to charge $50 to receive and $100 for transfers. :barf:

You can use the FFL Dealer/Holder Locator on GunBroker to find not only a listing of FFL's in your area but pricing (on some) for their transfer fees.

Last I heard, in Washington, The dealer also needed to charge you sales tax on the purchase. Although that might have been incorrect or have changed.

You pay sales tax on the tranasaction price with the retail dealer. Think of it like internet purchases. Do you pay sales tax on an out of state purchase or when you go to a flea market and pay cash?

$20 transfer fee? Sales tax on $20. Typically, the FFL dealer will charge ~$18.50 + ~$1.50 sales tax for $20 even for example.
