insane proposal?

Hallo everybody!
just brainstorming... Could be used a motorcycle brake clamp (old trash), with line and pump lever, to square true forging the ricasso in our blade? like it was the brake disk...changing with two true flat stocks of steel instead of the brake pads.
My concerns are two:
- heat from the blade could be quick transferred to the clamp oil leading to boiling.... altough they are enginereed to withstand red glowing braking disks for competition purpose, for some time before the oil issues.
- maybe the pressure involved is not enough.

I have not presses or surface grinders and consider a true flat and parallel ricasso area the keystone of simmetry of making a knife blade.

Any consideration about this insane idea?
Thank you :)

If I understand the question and idea, do you mean using the calipers as a press? They give even pressure throughout the face so I think if there was enough pressure, it wouldn't end up as a < (looking end on) it would remain parrallel [ just thinner than you started with. If you already had some of it forged in it might work as the steel should follow the angle of the blade but I don't think you would get even pressure.

Yes I think almost like You; but i don't know how many tons is expressed in the ratio of a motorcycle braking pump/caliper; my target is like one or two "squaring, flattening" strikes of hammer...if I'll ever try it i'll post the messed up results ;)

I'm afraid You're right and the two stocks could lean to accomodate around the "poor flats" of the blade instead of trueing them parallel....unless the stocks are welded to the pistons of the caliper.

Thank You al for the reply...is the first my post and i'm enjoing this forum since a year....and i love it!!!!!
