Has anyone seen the film "The Way Back", http://youtu.be/1Jlgenq_Ca0, as they work they way thru Siberia they see locals wearing a necklace made from some sort of plant that repelled the insects. Does anyone know what that plant is?

I grew up in bug country and I don't know of a natural repellent so I found this very interesting and would love to know what it is.

Anyone?

Not sure buddy but where I am we have a plant called Vanilla leaf that is used for the same thing !

Great movie and story........quite the walk!
No help with the plant, sorry, but I'm pretty sure most WSS folks would really like this film.

Sounds like the movie was pretty much based on the book "The Long Walk" by Slavomir Rawicz, 1956.

citronella?

We grew it a few years ago. Interesting plant, it seems you must crush bend

break it to release the oils.

Hope that helps,
J.

I have often used sweetfern (Comptonia peregrina, not actually a fern) as an insect repellant. I am not sure if it actually works, but it certainly isn't anything like DEET if it does.

My bet is that 'repellants' like that are good for nothing but making you feel like youre doing something.

I liked that movie. Read the book, too. From what I've read it's suspected that the 'true' story was fabricated.

I think many plants are great natural insect repellents.
Think about it,
have you ever seen a mosquito sting a Vanilla leaf
or attack a marigold?
