Just wondering if anyone has stripped off the handle of an Ontario Spec Plus knife?

I have/had a Spec Plus Bowie that served me for many years then had the blade break on me when batoning through some wood. Anyways, I'm planning on reshaping the blade into a smaller belt knife but don't like the handle with it. The handle was ok for being a chopper but it will be too big and cumbersome for a smaller knife.

So if anyone has removed the rubbery handle material from a Ontario Spec Plus knife what does the tang look like and how did you take off the handle?

I think the only thing that holds the handle on is the lanyard hole liner. Pull it out and the handle slides off. It's going to be a stick tang of some kind. Probably around1/2" wide or so, I'd guess.

If that's the case that's scary.

Again if its only 1/2" wide that's scary I would hope for at least 3/4-1" on a tang for a large camp knife.

But knowing Ontario this could very well be the case.

Most all knives out there with that type of a handle only have a 1/2" to 5/8" tang.

If you make it to big it makes the overall handle bigger.

They are stronger than most people think.

I've never broken a knife so to me they are plenty strong.
