This popped up yesterday on a recommend list from youtube. Its a very poor quality video of Cody Lundin answering questions about Dual Survival to an audience at the community college he is affiliated with. The audience were treated to a screening of the last episode of the series and then Cody comes on stage and answers questions. Don't worry, the episode is not contained in the attached videos.

The questions from the audience are not all that brilliant and they come from folks of all walks of life, kids and adults. However, I like how Cody answers things truthfully and feels at ease in front of people. He doesn't try to hide the fact that in TV things get twisted to make it more interesting. Among them, he iterates a few times that finding food under a 72 hr survival scenario should be a low priority but because it is sexy to the TV world this was over emphasized.

His interview also suggests things to me that I assumed might not be true. For example, he indicates that he eats a tonne of food prior to shooting. So it would appear that he consumes during a shoot only the food that they actually find on set. Not sure if that also applies to water. He engages in a little bit of self-hype but I think he does so in good humored way. His comments about the interview process for the show are rather informative. He suggests that some of the things he was upset about on camera were also true in real life. He tells that during the Peru shoot (desert breakdown, I think) he was sick and suffering from flu-like symptoms. That might explain some of the emotional response he displayed for which so many people made fun of him for.

Anyhow, I thought the vids give a good character portrayal of Cody, one that is not too far from how he portrays himself in the series. Seems like a good natured, good humored guy with sound basis in humility who is also very serious about his teaching and survival school.

I hope this doesn't duplicate a similar thread elsewhere. Enjoy!

Thanks for posting that. It would be quite interesting to hear what he had to say. However between the audio quality and my hearing, I mostly heard the crowd hoot and laugh. I would like to see this with subtext or even a transcription. My hearing's failing, not yours or his.

I don't know about Dave's book, but I bought both of Cody's last week on Amazon. 98.6 is a pretty good read. Straight up no B.S. with lots of humor and little of the hippy outlook on life.

is it pretty indepth on the technical or philosophical side of things?
(im looking for a survival book for reading. suggestions?)

Thanks Ken, I enjoyed that. I have read bits and pieces of a friends copy of 98.6, this just reminded me I need ed to pick up my own copy.

Thank you for posting.

Regardless of the field, an instructor or lecturer's knowledge on the subject is a given (supposedly that is) but the "social engineering" aspect in being able to deliver concepts is a premium not anyone posseses.

Cody's charisma coupled with humor is what makes him stand out.

If you go to his site, he has a section devoted his discription of the show. Pretty informative read.

Awesome. Thanks for posting Ken. I like Cody alot. His books are wonderfull, and he seems pretty down to earth, and his writing style make his books some of the easiest survival manuals to read out there. Cant stand his partner one bit, but I still watch the show.

Part one.
Its not perfect. Some things I couldnt hear so some of its missing.

Bold text is what cody says
Anything inside ( ) is what I say.

Give me a break...I transcribed this live while listening to it. I know I messed some stuff up.

==========================
He says thanks to people. no one in particular.
Mentions a car in the parking lot with its headlights on and gives th license #, says "do not do that in the woods."

Where is the dugout canoe?
"The dugout canoe is probably a planter in someones yard. so, um, yea, that sucked."

How much do you bench?
"i dont know, its how you lift, not what you lift."

Something about calories and how many he comsumes. cody doesnt answer this question, he asks people to use the microphone so everyone can hear the question.

How long have you had your bear claws?(his necklace)
"these are mountain lion and they were given to me by a friend and ive been wearing them for about 4 years straight."

In your book you said its bad to eat ice in a cold environment. What about if youre in a desert environment?
"if you have ice in a desert environment, I want to go the that desert. youre home, the coolers there, you just have a real bad buzz...so, i mean think about that. hyperthermia is what kills you in a desert, a high body temp, and you have ice that shouldnt be an issue, or you have a cooler right here and a beautiful woman right there"

Some people are addicted to eating ice,(WTF?!?! addicted) and if theyre in any other enviroments, like not so cold, would it risk hypothermia(thats what I believe he said, but he may have said hyper) or anything like that?
"yea, if you eat ice you can drop your core body temp, alot of ice, and if youre an ice addict, theres probably something on google, but you definetely drop your core temp eating ice, but "i dont know" but... dont eat ice, quit eating ice. next question"

out of all your survival movies, which was the hardest one?
"peru, because I was very sick in peru and i cant get into too many details about that and eventhough it is a tv show, while youre puking sucks. so, that was the worst for me"

How many days did it take to make this episode? like three days were the time we watched, but it was longer than that? "it was longer than that and theres certain things i can say and things i cant. but its longer than 3 days to produce that shows. it takes us longer than 3 days to get it done. you have to remember theres a lot of logistical stuff you dont see. you know for certain angles, the helicopter cant make it cause theres a blizzard or something like that so theres all this things that you know compromise the mission.

Why are you always barefoot? "just to make people ask that question. I like to stay barefoot cause thats one of the things they did to p.o.w.s, when took there shoes when they were prisoners, I like to be in contact with earth. I do wear sandals when I need to cause of choya cactus or ground temps or certain restaurants that dont appreciate me walking around barefoot. But fries is great, home depot is great. the managers have all approved me going barefoot and i will patronize them forever.

Is there anything in the wild you wouldnt eat? "this is a tv show, so theres alot of young impressionable minds out here. one of the nastiest things you can do in a survival situation is eat weird stuff. Tv likes that cause tv doesnt like to have the truth. so i want to go out there and regulate my core body temp with clothes and water. in a typical 3 day survival scenario, or 72 hours, where theyll find you dead or alive. A statistical search and rescue scenario here in arizona you dont really need to eat. Ill share with you a secret, look at this(grabs his belly), theres plenty of stuff here for 2-3 days, so what you put in your mouth can really hurt you. Ive had it happen to me, I dont want to to happen to you. To hell with tv. Ok?"

what does scorpion taste like? "hrmm, some of it tastes like a big booger. Now, im not a big booger eater. I never have. its a snotty kinda slimy kinda gross stuff we did just to piss dave off."

What about rattlesnake? "rattlesnake was good. everything tastes like chicken. it was good"

How do you feel about the boy scout group, of, of, getting ready for survival? " I think training kids of any age, of any gender, should be mandatory. So, I have respect for the scouts, anyone who trains in the lost arts, which just a few generations ago. when I have older folks in my audience doing lectures, they would say "hey cody, when I was in school id take a knife to recess when I went to school when I was a little boy". I said "whys that". "we were supposed to be whitteling then" "Dont take your knife to school now(speaking to the little boy who asked the question) , im not saying that. but you can see how the mindset changed." the older folks know what im talking about. were loosing a basic skill set and it troubles me, you know, cause as soon as that electric grid goes down, the power turns off youll see whats really going on. So the scouts i think are really helping turn that around, they always have, by getting down and dirty with skills that matter"

What was your most favorite challenge youve ever done? "on the show?" yea. "I think youre going to stump me. well trying to keep up with the schedule was very challenging. I know thats a boring answer. we shot from late december with a few breaks, up till june. I do this for a living, im not a tv guy, im a survival instructor, thats my profession for over 20 years. so I had to keep my courses going while filming and that was hard on the body. Im romantic, i know. sorry"

What was your scariest moment on camera? off camera? and are you signed up for season 2?
"rapelling, i dont like rapelling, i dont like the feeling of my body falling, thats unnatural that simulates death. I dont like it. I like this.(stomps ground with feet) so that was freaky for me to do the rapelling in new zealand and theres rumors of that but nothings been confirmed of season 2 ive signed nothing. im a free man at this point."

"Why did dave come up with flipping the canoe over and making it into a raft? "why did he come up with that..." (motions his hand like "get out of here") "has dave paid you to come to this event?" "because daves a really smart guy, so he got that idea"

Was your last adventure more fun or scary? "my last adventure was more fun cause I love brazil, I love brazillian woman, theyre... that was an adventure, going to airport with all these beautiful women. the birds the caiman its a very pretty county, ive always wanted to go there, but i was really excited cause the show was over. at that point I was very tired."

did a predator ever approch your camp? "you talking about dave?" no, like a jaguar or a snake? "no, the production company gets there before us in some locations and they saw a jaguar out in the bush but we never saw one. theres some people involved in this you dont see on camera. ok? so, were making noise and were not very attractive to jaguars when theres more than just the 2 of us. they did see one and i wish I could have seen one but i did not."

Since youre not wearing shoes, do you get bit by bugs and stuff more? "yea. I get bit by bugs and I have a splinter with a weird pusy thing on my foot right now. yea, my feet are rough. so I get bit by bugs alot."

Why do you have your hair in a ponytail?(i swear, some of these ?'s are lame) "dave likes to pull on them."

Whats the most disgusting thing youve ever eaten on the show? "there was a nasty worm I ate in new zealand, but worms arent delicious. I dont know, ive eaten some nasty stuff. highschool lunches, different airport foods, organic produce out in the wilderness is a step above some of this stuff.

ramsay, I really, really appreciate you going to all that trouble to transcribe it!

This pretty well confirms my impression that he is a cool, funloving, no BS guy. IMHO, this makes him much more believable when he does give serious advice.

I like how he responded to questions about eating wierd things on the shows. That is one man with some common sense. But willing to go to extremes to show that there are sources of protien out there if you can overcome your civilized reluctance to eat something that creeps or crawls.

I think his jesting and responses regarding Dave, and his mentions of production details explains a lot of what we see in the shows. Yeah, if I were able to go to any of the expert's survival schools, I believe I would pick the Bushhippy!:p

Technical.....?? Depends on you what think is technical. When he's talking about core temperature and ways to regulate it, then yes, he's VERY technical. Yeah, overall, I'd say it's pretty technical. I mean, there some places he talks about doing things a certain way and says, "if you don't do this, you WILL die."

It's NOT all about the kit, if that's what you want to know. The first half of the book is about coming to terms with the physical and psychological issues of being in a survival situation. I'm not quite through the book yet, I'm actually in the survival kit section now, maybe 2/3's of the way through the book. I can say that with what I've read so far, I (with some practice and knowing what I know now) would feel almost perfectly prepared for a scenario with the minimal kit that he carries. There's a couple of things that I'd have in addition to his, but I could make do without them. His kit weighs 4.2lbs without the fanny pack.

I've looked at his classes on his site. I'm debating taking some of them, the prices aren't bad at all, IMO.

Part 2.
Codys comments are in bold.
My comments are in ( ).
===========================

How long have you known dave and can you tell us something about your childhood? "my childhood... my god. Dave i didnt know. I met him at what they call a chemistry test where they picked four people from military, four wilderness...well I was the only hippie there...four wilderness people. I went against them and won that round and they werent quite convinced on dave yet and they brought back 3 more people. military, special forces, and dave. and they had me go back and train with 4 more guys. I went through 11 of them. Dave has a lot higher skill. his ability is not for outdoor survival, like I dont teach my students how to kill insurgents. thats not the mission. Special forces, navy seals, green beret , ranger, SERE instructor. They were looking all over the world cause theyre not going to put a slacker on tv. Im dam good at what I do."

were you really mad at dave when he killed the alligator? "I think, being in a survival situation, going after something that can take you out is a bad idea. so, yes, I wasnt very happy with dave. I was a little bit upset, Could you tell??"

when you were in Cambodia and dave made that cigarette filter and then he started drinking river water later on, how sick did he get? "uhh, he didnt. Daves done some sketchy stuff but he didnt(get sick). The water borne pathogens, the bacteria, viruses, protozoa and parasites that get people ill, you dont see them and thats the problem with that. youre not going to take a cig filter where these parasites are a micron in size and have it do a dam bit of good. Ive argued that over and over again and I always will. We know how precious water is in our country and you dont want to mess around with it. It was Laos, and he did not get ill on that. Hes drank some nasty stuff but no ones drank more nasty stuff than we have here in Arizona out in the backcountry cause you gotta drink it(to survive). He didnt get sick.

Three questions. my son was wondering what your favorite wild food is? "my favorite, my god, I like fruits(he named a fruit, but I didnt hear it)

It doesnt have to be on the show but what was your most difficult survival situation? "The cold in nova scotia. I dont know how to answer that question. Off the show Ive done some courses where we were very sick and required evac. I do this stuff for real off camera and theres some scary stuff. Sometimes you push the envelope and you break through and thats how real survival is and I dont want you to take that for grated. Its a tv show folks. You know, dont take some of the stuff you see on the show and go in the backcountry. Never bet your life on a tv show. I dont give a dam whos on the show.

Do you and dave get along? "Dave is very sweet to me. He'll probably be pissed I used the word "sweet". He has alot of respect for me, he knows my background. Im like his little brother and if we were in a bar fight he'd definitely fight for me. Kick some ass.”

Where was the first show tooken place at? (This kid needs to get out of college and go back to elementary school! ) “Nova scotia, up in canada. It was very cold. That was the first one we shot in january of this year.”

When you shot the Arizona episode...where was that located at? “We shot in young. Just outside that little town out in the bush. That part of arizona is beautiful but it was cold. We found that out real quick, you dont come to the mountains in Arizona in april and expect it to feel balmy.

I cant hear this question because some one talks near the camera and stands up and walks in front of it... Cody says “Im an only child. I was raised in a military family, we moved around a lot so nature was kinda my only companion. Ive been doing more with less for a very long time. I started as a hobby in town with all the summer camps. No one would hire me for survival skills. I have rejection letters from all the schools in town but the Yavapai College. Save your rejection letters cause you can wallpaper later. Basically if you have a dream, if you have something you're passionate about, dont let anyone sway you from it. Never”

Something about being barefoot... “I wear three pairs of wool socks and I would explain the physiology behind it but we dont have time.”

Are you still friends with dave? “yes, dave and I are still on speaking terms.”

I have two questions...One, where is dave now?(What? Do I look like his momma? I dont know!) “His names not waldo dude, how am I supposed to know.

And the second one is. where was dave born? “Just get out of here”(walks to the other side of the stage seemingly annoyed with these childish inconsiderate questions)

After your adventures(Dual survival) where do you guys go, like do you go to eat, like a buffet or something? “I mentioned Brazillian women...right? No, we dont do that. we're very busy. Yes we eat. everythings kinda, on the airplane, we get to certain places and we’re in a vehicle. We eat, and we eat alot and I eat alot before I go. thats what I do. Im teaching a course in the field in the next two days and Ill eat alot before that as well.”

During the louisiana swamp, how did you feel being barefoot around the snakes? “Yea, that was the worst snake problem. The cottonmouths were just like ticks on a dog. So, that was fairly uncomfortable for me, but as long as Im paying attention, which im used to. I dont recommend anyone do that in louisiana, muchless anyplace else for that matter, but you have to look at the native people. Alot of them died because of that. You know, there were no kneehigh boots way back when. That was freaky especially in the tall grass. Luckily I didnt get hurt and no one else got hurt.

I noticed on your show, dave is more of a risk taker. Is there a reason for that? “ Dave is a risk taker, thats dave personality. Im much more conservative. You spend 20 years in the backcountry with students practicing survival skills, you cant do that sort of stuff. Ok? Thats not supporting life.”

How many beaches have you been to? “how many beaches?” (stares at the kid...) “Like sandy beaches? Probably a bakers dozen. Maybe less.”
