You do have a point there. But, however thick and strong the AR/GB are, folders are still not the best for prying, and I suspect that the pivot would give out before .190" of BG-42 did, even with a 14mm hole through it.
I am also under the impression that the spyderhole's main advnatage is easy thumb purchase and recognition - quick access and whatnot.. I have weak digits and it takes a commited push to get the strider folder open - will the hole provide enough leverage? (comparison to the stud?)
In addition to the stated advantages of thumb purchase and indexing the opening mechanism, the hole will also not snag on clothing or gear like a thumbstud can. Regarding leverage, I find that the hole excels in this area. Consider that for a thumbstud, the force is being applied to an opject (the stud) that is at a 90 degree angle to the intended plane of motion.
With the hole, not only is one applying force directly to the blade, but the angle of force is much more acute (and could potentially be right in line with the plane of intended motion, depending on how meaty the thumb of the user is, and how much "blubs" through the hole), which implies to me that a hole would make it easier to open a knife, even one with such a weighty blade.
Disclaimer: I am not a physicist, so anything I just said could be BS, but it SOUNDS right.
Mr. Mayo is crazy enough to do the mod for you prolly...
Tom Mayo's EXACT level of craziness is the subject for another thread, or perhaps four or five of them.
