I was checking out some of my dads collection and thought that these pieces were kind of cool and seemed like maybe an inspiration..idk, maybe just a thought...one is a cadabaracus and another an ol marine knife and a case...all 3 regarded as survival knives back in the day.

After comparing the machax with the Estwing sportsmans ax(the leather handled hatchet everyone has), I presume Ethan desired the chopping ability of a hatchet and the versatility of a large blade. It's all right there in the name.

Those are some cool, well used old blades, though.

Hey Sam Hell......

The fixed blade in the middle of your Dad's collection was half the inspiration and the other half was the kookrie.....I used both for years and absolutele loved the performance characteristics, blade curvature and edge geometry.....The kookrie adds power to the mix......YES, just like a hatchet......Think of your Machax as a safety hatchet that doubles as a short machete or bolo that you can whittle with......(well, sorta).......

That is cool to know coming from you yourself, my dad is 81 and is showing me what he is leaving my son and i and unfortunatly im having to document every thing due to his failing health for his will..i do not enjoy seeing my father like this and its difficult..but with everything he shows me he tells me every story behind it...i was showing him the bk 4 and he then had me fetch these out and we were thinking of the possible comparisons or inspirations but i was not sure if i was right or not..anyway, thank you Ethan.

Hey Sam Hell......

Sorry to hear you are going thru a tough time with your Dad.......Spending time with him no matter what the reason you will, I suspect, treasure later.......The only fixed blade survival machete mfg I know of was Case and the only examples of the folder I have seen were Camillus......Brett says the were made by Cattaraugus and a differrent variation by Imperial......The third knife is a USMC Bolo and the example shown in Homer Brett's "The Military Knife and Bayonet" shows it with thick wooden grips.......Homer's book is a real resouce and he is a fine fellow and scholar extrordinaire......

Hope this has been of some help let me know if there is anything I can do.....Enjoy your Dad......

Thank you Ethan, and like i said before i appreciate your feedback and advice..a big problem with this world is that some of the younger generation of people who are maybe in theyre 20's and thirtys (im 34)and sometimes even 40's think they know everything...but they dont compared to the old school folk and a lot of them dont even try to understand or have some respect for the old storys..thats why i like taking my son and wife to go visit my father as he is living breathing history.. And im pretty sure we have a lot of people on here with that old priceless knowledge here on the forum and i have a lot of respect for all the other gents on here as well (including you and the very knowledgable moderators) for all of your storys and advice on different models of knives of the Becker lineage or even a dang joke or 2...keep on truckin everyone.
