Inspired by the recent small knife post I decided to take my little ML out with me today.

Figured I try a little fire practice while I was out. I've never had much luck using Cedar bark as tinder but gave it another go today adding some dried resin as well...

As I carried on along the trail the dogs sniffed this out, looks like a Raccoons tail maybe...couldn't see any other body parts ?

The dogs played in and around the water for a while...

I came across some decent fatwood and thought I'd light this up to compare with the Cedar bark....

This took 3 strikes and that was only because I missed the tinder completely with my first !

Matt must cringe everytime I post this knife because of the rough looking handle I put on but hey it works great and that's what counts eh !;)

As always great pics, Pit! I really need to get out more and work on my firestarting skill!

Yea, we prefer to cut the raccoon tail off after we kill them.
Besides saving weight, we also send out a message to the rest
of them, it says that they are not wanted in these parts.

The meat is pretty good, and you can use their penis bone
as a whistle.

I am joking, of course. I always appreciate the photos, Pitdog.
(I think you need to give up with the cedar!)

LOL...I thought you was serious for a minute !:D

Yeah I kinda agree with the Cedar, at least it is another, albeit poor , option if I can't find any fatwood.....like that's gonna happen !

as always nice pics mate, the mods should do a Pit dog photo consolidation thread so all the great pics are in one spot. keep em coming mate i enjoy seeing them

Great pics Pit.....I wouldnt call cedar a poor tinder choice. I think its wonderfull, and had trouble with it myself at one point. How are ya preping it? If I had fatwood everywhere like you do I wouldnt worry about other tinder either, but its nice to expand your craft. Dont give up on it man!!

If you gather up a big handfull of it and rub the hell out of it between your hands to seperate the fibers its easy to light. You want them as fine as hair. That was my problem with lighting it. Prep.

Then place your ferro rod in the middle of the ball and strike it very hard and slow. Just fast enough to create the spark. Stop short of the end of the rod so ya dont crush your tinder.

I really enjoy your pics PD, but each time I see that little knife I think, what a cool little blade, but it really needs a nice handle :-) So in case you were looking for a project...

See Pit, now aren't you glad your left those waterproof matches & Tinder Quick fire tabs home and filled that brand new pouch up with the important stuff ? ? ? :D
Are you sure Maisy didn't sneak up & bark behind that raccoon and that's the only thing left from it's hurried escape ? ? ? :D
Great shots once again buddy, nice looking knife as well.
Be safe.

That's a dense little kit you got there. I see a fire striker/tin knife sticking out there.

I personally have problems getting cedar to go in wet conditions. In the summer it's a bon fire.

Signal mirror glued to the back as well !

Bingo... Heck, cedar is my "fatwood" for tinder... you know how us Hardwoodsmen roll.

If you're having trouble with cedar, you're doing something wrong.

Fluffed red cedar bark is by a wide margin the best natural tinder I can find here (not being in fatwood territory, that is).

Awesome pics as always Pit. They way your dogs take to water, its a good thing you don't live in Florida.
