Why is it that I see Lyn Thompson take a cold steel SRK and cut a whole bunch of rope with it, then have it still shave hair off of his arm, when I can just cut thin air and have the edge turn as dull as a chalkboard. Are the knives in his video "Proof" made of different steel? This seems to happen with alot of knives of mine. In fact, I have left a razor sharp knife in a dry, airtight box for a couple months, and when it comes out, it is alot duller? Am I cursed? Or am I making a very amateur mistake that once pointed out will make me break out in tears.

I have not seen the proof video, however cutting demonstrations rely on technique as much as or more than knife abilities. That being said you should be able to cut up a decent number of pieces of rope with a Carbon V blade and still have it very sharp. I

f you can not do this, odds are, that the blade has not been sharpened properly and you may have left a burr on the edge. See Joe Talmadges Knife Sharpening FAQ, for a complete description of the problem and its solution.

In regards to storage, many steels will rust, even under the conditions you describe. If you coat them with a small layer of oil before storage you should get much sharper knives when you take them out to be used again.

the edge on a carbon V blade can "rust away" it is very important that you protect it from rust! I coat my blade with bicycle chain lube after every time i use it, and dont store it in its sheath!

I have a CS SRK and it is one hell of a knife, i have gone out and cut down a few trees, some in a single cut, and the edge is still shaving sharp!

Make sure that there is a proper edge on the blade to begin with, make sure that you are using the proper shapening tecnique.

A good carbon steel can hold an edge very well, i think that carbon V is 50100 steel, and other than the rust problem, its great
