I have made a hidden tang knife out of ATS34 and I wanted to weld a threaded rod to the end to put a butt cap on the end of the knife. Does the threaded rod need to be of a specific metal type and should the heat treat be done before the rod is welded on or afterwards?

j. haller when attatching a buttcap ..i use a little trick Harvey dean taught at a hammer in..i drill a 3/32 hole in the end of my tang..then tound the corners of the tang off and set it aside..then i cut a piece ofall thread to the desired length(almost all the way through the handle but not quite ) then i cut a slot in the all thread so that the tang fits into it slightly ..then i drill a hole through the allthread so that it lines up with the hole in the tang ..out in a pin..peen the ends slightly.. then i take my buttcap material and silver solder(the high temp stuff) a half of a coupler nut(used in waterwell applications among others im sure) to it then clean up the solder area ..so the handle will fit flush..then just screw the buttcap on..after wpoxying this joint will not fail..it works great..hope this helps

I have done it in a similar fashion using a lap joint on the two pieces. A lap joint, a pin through it, and Brownell's Silvaloy.

Make sure that you use high temp silver solder when soldering the nut on to the buttcap (right, Sabre?). The low temp stuff will not hold.

You can get the high temp silver solder at Rio Grande or any jeweler's supply store.
