Installing corby bolts

Hi folks,

I now have a question regarding the best procedure for installing some corby bolts on
a full tang knife. Assuming I have the holes (5/32) drilled in the tang, am I to use these
holes a pilot to first punch a 5/32 hole through the scales and then use this hole as a guide
for the step drill to accomodate the corby bolts?

Thanks, as always, for the help.

if its micarta you had better clamp that scale down when using the step drill bit. If you dont you'll need a new scale...trust me ;) It will shoot up the drill bit

it don't hurt to put masking tape on the bottom of your scales, either.especially with dymondwood.sure saves chipping out.like the man said, watch your depth real close too.and use screwdriver bits that fit.

Thanks a ton, guys,

Yep I too learned from experience to be careful with doing this. I wrecked a perfectly good wood handle once doing exactly what Brian describes.

To get the depth right just use the depth gauge on your drill press. I think every drill press has one??? I use it to set my depth so that the corby rivets would almost be sealed tight when put together, ie. just short of the two sides touching or running out of thread. This way when drilling the drill press stops at my indicated depth and not farther.

After working in a machine shop for around 10 years and using drill presses on metal parts a lot of that time I thought "I should be able to hold these little wood blocks down" :D
Glad to see I'm not the only one who's had a thing or two spinning around on a drill bit :)

My advice is get rid of that step drill and get a proper piolted counterbore. They cost less and are designed to do exactlly the job you are doing.

Get a piloted counterbore or a fluted step drill .The fluted drill (Pop's has them) is really a multi-fluted counterbore.Either one will do the job perfectly.Another important thing to avoid a lot of cussing' ,is to have the drill press table absolutely square. If it is off any amount the bolts won't go together, and you will have to slop up the holes to get them to screw into each other.A way to avoid this (especially with cheaper drill presses) is to drill the piloted rivet holes in one scale with the front of the scale facing away from you,and the second scale with the front facing toward you. This will make any angle of the hole align with each other (instead of meeting in a slight "V" ,which would happen if both scales were facing the same direction when drilled).
