Let me know if there is enough interest out there to warrant tutorials (text and illustrations) on the fabrication of custom knife sheaths----

Well, Of course! I still think we should have a forum devoted to sheaths. You have been doing custom leather much longer than most of us pups, I am sure you have a ton of tricks we could benefit from.

BTW - Awhile ago you said you would like to see some carving on my sheaths. Is this what you meant:D?

We might want to get this moved over to the shop talk area.

Heck yeah, Sandy! I'd love to see some tutorials on sheath making! C'mon people, where's the support for this idea?!!

I'd love to see it, Sandy. I've been making sheaths & a few holsters for longer than I care to remember. Never having had any training, I've developed my own work methods & picked up tips & tricks from others as I've gone along. I've made a bunch of pieces of which I'm really proud but more where quality is just "workman-like" at best. It would be great to have a series of tutorials! :D

Yes Please! As much as possible as soon as possible.

I've made all the sheaths for my blades but still don't feel really comfortable working with leather and I've always got a "how to" book close at hand.
I would love to have your sheaths for my blades but the cross-border thing plus exchange rate is a killer.
The next best thing is to learn from the best.

Howdy There..!
YES, YES..! I too would like t learn more on the art ofleather working. I also can't make a desent sheath for my knives and would very much could us the help....!!

"possum":cool:

oh heck yeah I would love to see something like that about leather sheaths. then someone could give us one on kydex or concealex

Thanks to all who responded. I would like to get all the help and support that would make the effort a success. Input from sheathmakers as to materials and tools used, availability of same, suppliers and their ratings as to the services rendered and their pricing structures. Pictures of all kinds and sizes of sheaths would be highly desirable. These should run from the plain to basket stamped to fully tooled and carved sheaths. Pictures of exotic leathers and various leather inlays in sheaths would be welcome (Show and tell)

Featured would be tutorials on pattern making, identifying types of sheaths best for different styles of knives etc. Working knowledge of leathers as to types of tannage, thicknesses used in sheaths would be discussed at length.
Layout and cutting of the leather, casing leather methods, edging, creasing, burnishing, assembly, hand stitching, use of dyes and finishes, adhesives or glues----all would be detailed and as simply as possible. There is no mystery to leather craft but attention to detail (the little things) is the biggest asset to beautiful results. Molding of leather and the making of the molds will be vastly important to the maker who specializes in folder cases. Pros and cons of wet molding and techniques will be demonstrated. The types of sheaths the instructions will encompass will be from small folders to large Bowies, standard and pouch and semi-pouch styles. The info will be accompanied by illustrations, some drawn, some photos
will be used to show salient features.
Now---what is your desire? Do you think this dog will hunt? Your input highly regarded and desired! Sandy

Ron, my friend, that is one helluva nice example of craftsmanship and I don`t praise too often. And I have praised your work before and expect to do so into the future. It is one of the things you have to put up with when you are GOOD! It is my fervent hope that I can count on you in this little undertaking. I am sure we could help some of our friends with their desire to fashion their own leather!

Must compliment your carved roses, one of the hardest flowers to carve and hi-light----

DCKNIVES---Dave, I thank you for those kind words. And you, my friend, are no slouch when it comes to your sheaths! As I stated in the post to Ron, I could use your help too! I still have many friends in The Florida Knifemakers Association, a fine group of people. Kindest regards, Sandy

Sandy,Thanks for the praise.I would more than happy to help with pictures, designs, tips or anything else.Regards,Dave :)

Leather working tools are on my X-Mas list!
Now I'll know what to ask for :D
Too cool.
Thanx!

I've made a number of sheaths for both fixed blades and folders and even had one design adopted by a trapper in British Columbia! Always willing to learn more especially if you know anything about the construction of Randall sheaths which are really engineered leather and superb.

Hi Sandy, I would be very grateful for tutorials on sheathmaking. It would be great if you could consider starting really basic and with the minimum number of tools/materials required for us that have absolutely no experience.

For those that may not know- go to Jerry Hossom's website and look at the DROP-DEAD GORGEOUS, STUNNING, AWESOME examples of Sandy's leatherwork!!!
(Sandy- is my check in the mail?);)

Helmar, A forum on sheath making would be most welcome indeed. The
time that you and other sheath makers would spend would be sharing in the
most positive way I can think of. The teaching of others will always enrich
both the student and the teacher. It can also raise Bladeforums to a higher level
of mentoring in the craft of knife making and use. A sorely need boost to
both our hobby and knife ownership in general.
