Instructions for braided lanyard?

What is the purpose of lanyard/paracord on the end of a folding or fixed blade knife?

Loop it around your thumb as you grip your knife or put it around your wrist before you grab 'hold and you're less likely to lose it - overboard, in the woods, in the weeds, whatever.
