Insult to Bud Lang?

Got my new Knives Illustrated the other day, and noticed that the majority of articles written were attributed to "By the staff". Somehow, this does not seem right. Its my understanding that Bud Lang wrote these articles, and that somehow they are dogging him out by not giving him credit. I dont know the circumstances of his leaving KI, but this does not seem right. If these articles were written by anybody other than Bud, that person would have gladly put their name on the credit. Come on KI, give us readers a little credit.

I agree 100% Also, did you notice the horrendous mistakes in the rag..er..mag?
Pictures mis-labeled in Georbe Gibo's and Brian tighe's articles? How about the second pic in Ken Cox's great article? Nothing there! It may actually be a good thing that Bud's name wasn't associated with this particular issue.

I have great respect for Bud and Bruce.

Bud wrote 'em he should get the by-line.

I agree, not a good way to treat a person with the class Bud exemplifies.

I guess the publishers had there reasons, but my pointed head can not come up with a good one. Adding Bruce to KI was a good thing, but not mentioning Bud's past and present contributions does not sit well with me.

There were SEVERAL mis-labelled pictures.

If you spot all of them, I hear you get a free knife!

Seriously, I have every respect and best wish for Bruce & Co., but this KI came off as far less than polished or professional.

Gerome, Bud has a new mag in the works. It should be every bit as good as his previous publications.

Yeah, those mislabeled pics are not a good sign of a new start, but I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt: they were probably in somewhat of a frenzy in transitional chaos to get this issue to print. The mistakes jumped out at me like a flashing lightbulb.

I picked up my copy at the Guild Show and read it Friday night. Almost stopped by their booth to point out all the mistakes, but I figured it must have been known, the mistakes were so obvious. Somebody didn't proof the first pass layout before it went to print (we used to call these "galley's in college newsletter days, 1984-ish) ... must've been transitional chaos.

Crediting Bud.... he deserves credit, but then again, he may prefer a clean break of his name from KI, and KI obviously preferred this as well as they had the power to do it either way.

KI was the best of the 3 biggies. It is possible to lose that momentum in short order, however, and this first issue is evidence of that possibility. The 2nd and 3rd issues will set the trend.

Sure hope it doesn't turn into a factory/production dominated shill like Blade.... as Blade pretty much sucks most of the time...lot's of pages as they always brag, but incredibly low density of useful/interesting info.

I couldn't believe some of the mistakes I saw in that magazine! Punctuation, spelling, having the right pictures with the right captions--all of it was screwed up. This probably won't stop me from reading the magazine, though. Hopefully, it's just the "new editor jitters".

Thank you, gentlemen. Was surfing through the list and saw my name, and thought, "Now, I'm in trouble."
As you all know, I voluntarily left the magazine. They hired one of the top guys in the industry to take my place, and even hired a lady managing editor to make sure everything is perfect. For the record, I had turned in 2/3rds of the magazine before leaving. Every word was edited beforehand. I turned in five articles that I produced, but some guy named Staff got the credit. But, that's okay. Glad my name wasn't on them. After articles are laid out, I proofed them again, and it was very seldom that you found typos or captions under the wrong photo. Now they have two experts putting the touches on the magazine (which is 16 pages smaller now, so they actually have even less work to do than I handled) so the next issue should be better. Let's hope so. One of the KI people called me at home one day, asking what a Wharncliffe blade was, then asked what hand whoring or something was, and I attempted to explain he meant "hand honing", and his reply was they would just leave it out. Can't be confused with facts. He just didn't believe you can hone a blade by hand. Guess he was writing captions. Good luck.
Myself, I'm working with a financial group right now, and I hope to have good news very soon. Am planning a new magazine that is going to be first class. Will keep you apprised of when it will be coming out, etc. Again, thanks for the nice words. Bud Lang

Glad to see your post, Bud. Hopefully the s#%t hit the fan when that issue came out and they'll get it right next time. Please keep us informed of your new project.

Bud,
We all look forward to your "good news". You are a class act. Also nice to see you here.

My son Greg says to say hello (essay contest winner from last year). After you left, KI decided not to send him his subscription he won.

Take care Bud....

Greg, did they really not send your son the subscription he won? Let us know as I believe I have purchased my last copy of KI.

Hey, Bruce Voyles, is this true?

UPDATED and REVISED

Honestly, the answer is yes. We got the first few issues while Bud was at the helm. Then they stopped. I thought at first it was because we moved but then I remembered I emailed Bud to let him know we were moving and he took care of that for us. Not sure why it happened. Right now I am buying the magazine in case Greg asks. To be honest his attention have shifted somewhat like a lot of 12 year olds but he did win the subscription and it stopped. I should call and fix this since it be easily rectified.

Thanks for all of your concern.

Regards,

First off I don't think anyone is going to intentionally kill a subscription to a 12 year old kid, and properly notified a subscription will continue--and usually be given credit for any missed issues. I have every confidence that KI honors all subscriptions to the point that I'll pay for this kids out of my own pocket if they don't. I dare say the odds are the moving played a role in something going haywire.
There were some mistakes in the October issue, due in part to an editor leaving before the issue was put to bed leaving some editors with no experience with knives the job of trying to piece it together. I came in on the very tail end of that, too late to proof anything, only to furnish an editorial, and pull together a brief article on household knives for which the photos had already been take. It wasn't a perfect issue.
The next issue, Dec. 2000 is the first one I've handled totally, and I will take the heat on that one.
Bud has left KI, by his choice he states in a post here, and now I'm at KI. That's the reality, and no posting here is going to change that. If you like the magazine under my editorship, you should continue your subscription. If you have a problem, you can feel free to contact me directly (hopefully prior to posting on a forum before getting a direct reply). My email is bruce@jbrucevoyles.com.

I think Bruce is right. I am sure no one purposely stopped anything and I certainly don't want to flame this issue. All I had to do is call and I didn't and that is my fault. I should have used a better choice of words when I posted I guess so I want to make sure everyone knows that I do not feel this is a conspiracy. I'll email Bruce and get this taking care of. I appreciate the support from both Bud and my fellow knife nuts and I know Bruce will do a bang up job at the helm. Let's give this a chance and support Bruce to continue what Bud started. Bruce has been around a long time and had nothing to do with Bud's departure.

Respectfully,
