Hey guys, my old jewelry burnout oven doesn't seem to get up to A2 temps any more. It used to, but now has cracks in the interior walls. I am assuming this could be the cause of the oven not getting to temps it used to reach. I have a few questions I was hoing you guys could help me out with.

1. What is insulwool made of? Wool?

2. Do you think it will work?

3. Should I treat it with satinite even if it is on the outside of the oven?

Any help is appreciated as always.

It should be treated with something. Exposed ceramic blanket can be nasty when the fibers come out into the air.

You could add a layer of inswool to the oven, but you must assure that you aren't enclosing any electrical wiring or other parts, or they will overheat. If possible, you should remove the existing metal case, and insulate the refractory directly with a layer of 1" inswool, then make a new casing . This probably isn't worth the trouble, though.
The inswool should be covered with a layer of satanite to make it more robust as well as seal it.

One trick for an ugly but serviceable forge/oven shell is to make the inswool wrap/liner, and cover it with hardware cloth...or even chicken wire. Then cover the wire/wool with layers of satanite. This will end up looking like an adobe forge/oven, but will work just fine.

I can make a new cover no problem. My work is primarily a precision sheet metal shop. specializing in enclosures. I will look into it, thanks.

As XMTGS stated Inswool (kaowool) should always be covered in something. It is a spun ceramic fiber blanket. It will act similar to asbestos in your lungs and like fiberglass on your skin. Please wear protective gear when using it. You can also try patching the cracks from the inside with satanite and an infrared reflecting coating like ITC-100.

It worked! Burned the paint off the outside, but it worked.

Thanks Wayne, I'll look into enclosing it asap.
