Integral Battle Bowie from the Alaska Bush

A few years ago I had an order for an interesting knife. It was an integral fighter that had a sort of thumb ramp on the spine. It is the one with the Ironwood handle below.

When I made it, I had drawn up several variations of the knife.... One of them was this larger Bowie/Chopper with the micarta handle. I just got around to finishing this knife, and I wanted to share it here on the Forums.
This new knife is a prototype made out of Cruforge-V. There are a couple things that make me extra happy about this knife design. First is the balance. It is as heavy as a standard chopper, but balances like a fighter. This inspired the name "Battle Bowie". The balance point is exactly 1" in front of the bolster. This makes the knife feel extremely "fast" in the hand. The second thing that impressed me is the ergonomic function of this configuration. Because the "guard" is actually the back of the edge, you can choke all the way up on the blade. This places the cutting edge so close to your hand that it feels like you can whittle and do other fine cutting chores that are difficult with other really big knives.
The specs are:
Blade: 10-3/4"long, 2-1/2" wide, 3/8" thick at the plunge, consant taper.
Handle: Black linnen micarta, Stainless pins.
OAL: 16-1/2"

Thanks for looking.

Adam.

that looks like a TON of fun!

Interesting design! I kind of like the lines on both, and don't think I could say which one I prefer. I like the wood on the first one, though.

How do you like working with CruForgeV?

Thank you Guys!
I just took the big Battle Bowie out on a little task. Since we are leaving home for Brazil in a few days, we needed to pull our boat out of the water so it doesn't sink while we are away. We just pull it up the beach a little ways so the tide can't get to it and pull the plug so the water drains out. The boat is too heavy to pull out with our 4-wheeler unless we use some rollers under it. Standard procedure out here is to just cut down 4 or 5 3" sapplings to put under the boat. I tried out the new blade on this chore, and it cuts like a LASER!

Matt, Let's just say working with CruForge-V is not the fun part. Cutting with it is. It's hard to forge, hard to grind, and really hard to sand. I like it in the heat treat. It doesn't seem to warp as bad as some other steels, and it almost always has VERY fine grain. So far, I'm pretty impressed with the performance.

Adam-

Just debating on weather to buy some CruV from Alpha supply... Sound like I will give it a try.

Yep, that sounds about right. Stuff will hold a 120 grit scratch like it truly wants it. I had to completely switch my hand sanding paper, as conventional shop rolls wouldn't touch the stuff. It doesn't seem to want to move under the hammer unless it's hot, but it's got all the toughness of the spring steels but with WAY better edge holding.

That Battle Bowie of yours certainly seems to be doing the steel justice, that's for sure!

Both are amazing Adam,
I've done some similar projects in the past using 52100 and i know it's a hard work, especially fit the handle,
Congratulations.

Really like what's going on with the first one!

To my eyes, the second looks like it would benefit from having a guard, aesthetically speaking.

That's a striking and distinctive design with a an extra heaping of cool, even if it isn't quite my particular thing aesthetically. I'm glad to see you putting some CruForge V through its paces.

Roger

Hello Brother. Very nice knives, congratulations. Jimmy said that you're already making integral knives, so you don't need to come here... I'm thinking he's jealous! He's on my side saying that when you arrive here, we'll already have two knives (each) finished! You'd better run! This guy is workaholic! We're waiting for you brother!

Have a safe trip!

What a beast! Not the design I would go for for now -I still owe you an Email- but that's for sure an intersting design and a terrific work Adam.
