This is a full integral made out of a 9lb D-2 billet, Curly Koa handles. Todd calls the tang, his Straddle Tang as it comes out around the handle material.
Todd made this for the Plaza Cutlery Show in 2006.

Todd, your imagination has no limits while still remaining within your
recognizable design concept.
Your designs were always BOLD and DARING and somehow get
BOLDER and MORE DARING as the time goes by....

It seems that there are no limits to your ability to work steel as you wish.

This is a great talent!

All the best,

Tanya,

This is a great concept. I can only imagine what an engraver would do with that!

In that spirit, I think the mosaic pins are not needed, and I would rather have the pins framing the handle than in the center. It would be possible to mill designs in those slabs. That would be cool too.

I wonder if those slabs could be done facetted, like that:

I'm really not a fan of the blade profile. It reminds me of cheap Aitor knives from the 80's, with all due respect, M'am.

Todd agrees Joss, that some engraving on the tang area would be great.
The primary problem with that is it is difficult to engrave on heat treated steel...and on this piece the handle/tang area had to be left in a pretty blocky square to prevent warpage during ht. then ground away afterwards. We don't know of anyone who will engrave after ht.....if there is I would love to be put in contact with them!

That is an amazing knife. Simply amazing. The bolsters remind me of shotgun sideplates.
I agree that some engraving would look terrific if possible.

What he said.

If it were my piece, I'd take it as-is, sans engraving. Engraving would look great no doubt and there is a huge canvas to work on, but it will have the effect of visually separating the handle from the blade and the single biggest cool factor this knife has is the fact that blade and handle are one piece - done in a very imaginative fashion.

Awesome work.

Todd,

Talk about different!!! Love it.

Can you start a thread in the makers forum with some of the tooling you use? Your recent posts have made my milling machine lust go through the roof. I am not sure I have the patience to attempt something like this with my bandsaw, KMG, files and sandpaper. I know its "possible," but so is grinding a 15" blade from scratch with a thousand 1500 grit belts :)

Here is what that knife started out as, just gotta mill away everything that isn't a knife!

Dave, i can do that, when time permits. I gotta bunch of stuff for OKCA to finish up right now.

I love 'outside thinking'. How entirely appropriate in this context. ;)

As I admired it I was immediately remembering my desire for a Chris Reeve knife called the integral/outegral, made about 15 years ago. Probably you have never seen it, but you will see why I considered it.

Keep it up.

That's my favorite piece from you that I have seen. I love the blade shape, the overall shape and the signature fullers. You are one talented maker, that's for sure.

You are one creative guy Mr. Begg! Very nice!:thumbup:
