Integrating knife with an unarmed art.

I have been studying unarmed arts for a while. Arts that proclaim you need no weapons and so on. What I would like to know is if any of you out there have done this with an unarmed art. I have heard before about how with some arts all you have to do is place a blade in your hand and do the same movements. i am not so muhc curious on methodology but the examples you guys have heard of and done yourselves. This is mostly about curiousity and wanting to see what other's are doing when their training lacks something. Thanks.

There are similarities in using different weapons and there are differences. Thrusting with a stick or a knife is much like thrusting with a spearhand or fist, a backcut is much like a backfist, a snapcut to an attacker's wrist is much like an edge of hand blow to an attackers wrist -- but there are differences too. Different targets for different effects, and some of the moves you do with a knife have no close analogue. Defending is very different; defenses that work against a thrusting fist don't necessarily work against a thrusting knife (and the empty-hand arts that teach knife defenses often teach methods that don't work).

Starting knife training after you've done a lot of empty-hand training ... you're starting with a foundation ... some of the moves will carry over ... but others will have to be unlearned ... you've already learned how to learn martial arts moves, and that's a big advantage.

Thanks a lot Cougar that is actually a big help for me. I gues I wasn't thinking it would be so obvious. (too long being conditioned that there are always going to be mystical secrets one must learn) I will continue the filipino art and just get a training version of my blades and run through the forms carefully making the necessary changes. Thanks again.

Incidentally what art did you study that you integrated a knife into? Or is it a filipino style that does this automaticaly?

Some people will argue with me, but I don't think there's any art that enables you to change from empty hand to knife automatically, without having to learn anything new. Some empty-hand arts make a better foundation for knife training than others, no doubt....

I try to avoid saying anything that could possibly be construed as claiming credentials. I have never trained with anybody. I have never even met anyone. I hold no rank in any martial art -- I don't even know the names of any martial arts. I have no connection with any military, paramilitary, law enforcement, or scouting organization. I do not own a knife -- in fact I have never seen a knife.

Of course I understand Kev wasn't asking for credentials ... I'm just a little gun-shy after recent events around here....

By the way, ez-board's ISP is having troubles today -- they've been notified and it should be fixed soon.

I think what I am going to try is sitting down with my notes about the forms and techniques and start making changes and then running through the forms again.
Don't worry Cougar I haven't trolled yet (to the best of my knowledge) and don't plan to start now. What's the point of raising a stink. If somebody is saying something you don't like don't listen. Why does everyone feel the need to contest and piss and moan. Who cares. Once again thank's very much for the help perhaps it should have been obvious but you put it in such a way that it was very easy for me to understand.

i think it is better to treat the hand like a hand (for its strengths and uses), and treat the blade like a blade.

it is not "pilipino-like" to have the techniques the same no matter what is in your hand. i dont think there is anything in fighting where a person can say, "we do X for all Y situation, and B for every A situation." there is nothing wrong when you have many techniques for many situation. the hand can never do the same damage that a blade will do, unless you put a blade in that hand.
