Some time back Buddy Thomason started a thread on the TKN Sheath Making Forum "Integrating Sheath Design & Knife Style" http://knifenetwork.com/forum/showthread.php?t=22381 (stay tune for part 2 of the discussion....)

The centerpoint of that discussion was this Bowie by John Perry:

After several false starts - for me building a sheath for a Neo-classic Bowie such as this is a real balancing act - a blending of the traditional and the "modern".
Anyway here is the outcome - a complete change from my regularly seen frontier styles.....:

I believe I got that "blend" - What do ya'll think? hope you enjoy the view.....

This one along with the Sow's Ear into a Silk Purse are on there way to Buddy as of tomorrow.

I bet I know a fine fella that lives in Jawja that will loves seeing this one. You most definately accomplished the integration there brudda. Glad to see your back on the grid also :)

It is breath-taking. I really mean, I forgot to breath for a minute while looking and enjoying these...

Chuck, that is one fine sheath. I think you've climbed another rung, brother. ;)

That is really slick Chuck. I like the way you used the welt to compliment the throat, very cool.
Regards,
Greg

NO doubt in my mind Chuck that you can pull off what ever you put your mind to. I'm glad to see you're into the medal now..
I like that package very nice.. :D

Howdy guys - did my weekly town trip yesterday and by the time I got home was too tuckered out to do much....

Brian - that's not a steel welt (too hard to sew through for one  ). Anyway....it's a strip of fine silver inlaid into the edge.
Here are a couple of closeups.....

Dan - I only do the metal work when I'm either conned into it by a good customer and/or when they don't blink when I quote them the price ;)
Thing is I dislike working with nickel and usually only use Sterling - on this the face of the throat is nickel, but the edge binding is fine silver as noted and the throat plate (the piece the blade goes through) is Sterling. When Sterling is annealed it works like butter.

Chuck
"edge binding"
is it channeled and inlayed into the leather to bind the seam?

very nice indeed :)

Killer work. I love the integration of silver and leather. It might be a pain but it looks great.

I don´t know... maybe you should have tried Kydex? :D
Just kidding!
The sheath looks very good and matched the knife perfectly, plus the silver inlay on its edge is a nice touch and something I had never seen before.

Ivan - I just made the sign of the cross ;)
Actually I have nothing against any of the "plastics" - if I was in some of those places where my life depended on it I'd most likely use 'em.

Dan - the edge binding - it's purely decorative and yes I CAREFULLY cut a shallow groove in the edge and then glued the silver (.010" thick) into it. I've done similar work in the past using a narrow leather binding, but this is the first with silver - won't be the last though....

chuck
are the ends fastened? self pinning if you get what I'm saying?
so if the customer happens to bend it, the inlay will hold up.
that's why I was thinking channel stock
for me, I'd be worried that it would come out..if just a strip..

but I'm thinking that if the customer bends it one to many times it's his baby..

Beutiful combination! I don't know how durable it is, but the silver strip realy puts the finishing touch on. WOW!
