Yes, I meant for this one to look beat to Hell! My father loves antiques and such so I made this for Father's Day (yes, I know, a ways off still). O-1 steel, patinated with FC and rubbed out with steel wool. Handle is black mulga and pins are old style "square" nails. Let me know what you think!

Great work Eric-I love the rustic look-I think your dad will be happy with it:thumbup:

Nice, may be scratch the hadle too a bit. It looks too new for rustic looking blade? I am just kiddin....:)

I think I wish you were my boy!

Seriously, an excellent piece of work. And hand-made. Trust me, that's every father's very favorite thing!

Thanks for the comments. After I posted last night and didn't get any responses, I was like "Man, I guess it does look like a POS..." The pics aren't the greatest, still working on my light box to get the shading just right.

Don't worry too much. We can see well enough to know it's a fine knife.

Probably more important to put that extra time into improving your knife-making skills even more...or, maybe, into talking to your dad.

Yeah, that's a sweet looking piece there TecSec, dad should be proud as a peacock.
I gotta agree though, the handle looks a little too pretty for the rest of the knife. I know you put in a lot of work to get it that way, and it's great, but if you just toned down the shininess a little I think it would match the overall look a little better. I don't think dinging it up or anything, just a quick rub with some fine grit paper to tone it down, make it look hand worn. Just a thought.

As a knife though? Very, very nice work.

Looks really nice! Those aren't horshoe nails are they? Your dad should love it and you've just made me feel guilty.

have a good one,

I think it's pretty cool. How did you set those square nails without leaving gaps? Nice touch however you did it.

BTW, I love your mark too   Very cool. Is that a stamp?

Kerry,

I set the nails by drilling two holes (1/8") side by side. I trimmed the ends off of the nails and ground them to just about the size of the two holes. Then I just gave them each a couple of whacks and set them. I was going to add some epoxy for good measure, but forgot and honestly, I don't think they'll ever come back out. And yep, that's a stamp courtesy of Harry A. Evers. They did a fantastic job engraving it up for me.

Nathan,

They are similar to horshoe nails but for wood working. I bought them a few years back to make some iron nail style crosses from one of the big online wood working suppliers. I think they use them to emulate forged nails.
