Interchangeable Groove

So we are kicking around an idea on an interchangeable Groove. The concept would be that there would be a universal handle, and the user would have the option of buying multiple blades to change out at their leisure. We could possibly have different overlays for the handle or even colored hardware to change up the look and personalize your Groove. Lot's of steel options...

Seems like there are a bunch do-it-yourselfer's out there, thoughts?

Is a "parts knife" something the public would be into, or more of a PIA?

I like the idea, but I'm sure the more knowledgeable will be along shortly with bigger and better thoughts on the interchangeable Groove idea.

I think that is a super idea. It would be fun to mix and match parts to get the knife just right for peoples likings. Think of all the fun we will have posting our own different configs and such.

I think it's a great idea!
It'd also be a great way to let people try out exotic steels. Boutique runs could just be a blade.
With the composite blade technology you could get some really expensive steels out there and actually only have to use a very small amount of it
Being able to personalize the knife is a great thing.
I would think it could be a continuing source of revenue, once everyone has a base knife, you know a good percentage will buy every new part that comes out.

that is an awsome idea Thomas. i wasnt really sold on it, but if you guys go with a interchangable blade, then i would be very much interested

I would be concerned with the liability issue. A lot of people will cut themselves changing out the blades. I wouldn't recommend a "parts knife" with any Speedsafe knives. The Groove is easy to assemble though, and I like all the different groove patterns. What is the second from the top in the right hand column supposed to be?

I find your post interesting but at the same time a bit unneeded. I mean, Kershaw has an order form on their site for customers to order the spare parts they need to fix their own knives. The parts that can be ordered include the torsion bars to fix the speedsafe so they obviously have weighed the liability of people taking apart their own knives.

On the interchangeable blade idea I think it is a spectacular idea and would jump at the opportunity to buy a groove with this idea in place.

i thought that the groove used the new flipper tech, not speedsafe? it wouldnt be much of a problem in that case to get the blade out

Good idea.

I would personally rather start with a Titanium frame lock handle though.

And also have different back spacers or standoffs available. Why not an assortment of clips too?

Although this brainstorming is important to our survival, let's break it up and go see if we can help production get some knives (Tyrades) out. :D

I really like the idea if anyone is interested in my .02 cents. People like to make everything they have their "own" all the time. Firearms are a great example, everyone changes grips, sights, colors, engraving, you name it.

I would absolutely purchase one anyway, and the groove was not on my current "must purchase" list and this would put it there. You could also offer combo packages at a discount maybe, sets with two blades and some handle options too. I would like to have options on the handle too, do you have any examples of your thinking direction there? Love all the designs of the blades you put up. Very nice.

Not to mention specialty blades.
Gut hook/skinners, hawksbill, Wharcliffes, fully serrated etc.

Having a variety of colors and materials for the grips would be great.

If they were made with specialty blades I would get a Groove and then by some extra parts and have a great time fixing up the groove for the days cutting task. A fully serrated blade might be real nice for the outdoors especially paired with my Rd-4.

I am full onboard on this idea. Personall I like the blade shape but, not the current grooves. Some of those others you listed and with other options would make this a hell of a deal.

The blades do look nice. But from a function point of view; except for the tanno they aren't that much different.

I would focus first on "We could possibly have different overlays for the handle or even colored hardware to change up the look and personalize your Groove." then the blade styles.

:D

That's awesome! I love playing around with modular stuff to make it "just right." I can't wait to see some more development of this idea.

I remember when *cough* Gerber *cough* came out with a blade changer.
More of on the go type thing. My old boss sold a lot of them. Peeps like
the idea of having 2 or 3 knives in one.

But this, this is over the top. Being able to have so many diff blades
and be able to change the handles (hardware, inserts). That would
be completely, totally awesome.

Maybe offer it in a tin or box so you could store extra blades, pieces etc.
Have little grooves cut out in felt(velvet) to arrange blades, a little
space for screws, springs...that sort of thing.

I would definitely purchase one.

Oh, and give whoever thought of this a raise! Then get some samples made up and we will be happy to test them for you! :D

I definitely like the idea of functionally different blades: serrated, saw, drop point, gut hook, even a tanto, maybe even a short blade. Just different groove patterns wouldn't attract my attention.

I can't see it making Kershaw more money.
But ya never know, Barbie and her innumerable ensembles sure have sold well over the years.
