Interest in a Buck 882/889 with a thicker liner?

I contacted Joe Houser about Buck offering or modifying the 882/889 SMBFs with a thicker liner, in the .060-.070" range. The design is great and very popular, but I think many, including myself, would love a thicker liner and liner lock, similar to what the 880/881 used at .065" (which are now discontinued). Joe expressed interest in this also and if there is enough interest, Buck may consider offering an 882/889 with ~.065" liner. Finally, it'd have a beefy liner lock to match the beefy blade and design.

So, let's see all those who would be interested in this!

Me. Two thumbs up.

I'm interested, you bet. While we're at it, let's ditch the black blade too.

As an 889 wannabe owner, it sounds good to me. The only downside would be a slightly thicker grip, right?

I wonder if the thicker liner would solve the occasional lock failure I've read about here on the forums?

Thumbs up for thicker liner on the 889 SBMF. I also vote for a 889 w/ partially Serrated blade.

I'd prefer this thread to stick to a thicker liner on any of the existing 882 or 889 strider design Bucks.

Any more interests?

So do I. Is it the thickness of the liner, or the geometry of the mating surfaces?

My 889 lock fails a modest spine whack (subjective and FWIW), and more importantly, it fails agressive ice-picking into plywood, stressed in the direction of closing the blade. OTOH, the lock holds when pushing the blade tip into plywood with a good portion of my upper body weight, stressing in the closed direction, and twisting the knife (a more realistic test for my uses).

My mini Emersons don't fail at all under the same tests, and the Ti liners are the same thickness as the steel liners in the Buck. I thought the Ti liners of a given thickness were equivalent to a thinner liner of steel. If so, then it would seem to be fit, and not thickness, that's the issue.

If the lock were as robust as the rest of the knife, it would certainly be my Do-All EDC work horse. Instead, it falls into the "some restrictions apply" category, and I'm still looking.

The thin liner is one of the few complaints about these knives I would think Buck would be aware of that by now and should be looking to improve them.

Maybe this should get posted in General? The 889 has gotten a fair amount of discussion there, with liner questions common. If we need to generate a certain level interest for this (probably large) I think we should solicit from a wider audience.

Blue Sky - I thought about putting it in General, but wasn't sure if the mods would move it to the Buck forum. I'll give it a shot and see what happens.

This is generating less interest than I had anticipated. The design is great and I thought many would want a beefier lock. I may just pick up the current 889 and hope for the best.

I have/Had 4 of these knives,
Just my experience but I never had a lock fail on any of 'em, and I think the lock is tough enough to unlock without beefing it up some. Just my opinion of course... :D
