Interest in a Knife Exchange Club?

Curious if anyone would be interested in a Knife Exchange Club here on the JK Forum? The idea is that you post pics and info on knives that you would be willing to loan to someone else to try out for a few weeks. As others post their offerings if you see something you want to try, you would contact that person and arrange the transfer. The person you are borrowing from could then select one of your knives and you would exchange the two. If the exchange is two ways, you would each pick up the shipping twice, once to send and once to return.

I've done this with kyenglish and I believe there have been some others that have done these as well. It was actually a lot of fun and I got to try a cool blade that I had no experience with. This also may be a way to try some JK models that you have not seen or even get a chance to handle a JK for the first time (as you eagerly await your order! :) )

As I said, I am just curious if this is something that any of you would be interested in participating in.

Sounds like a real good idea. It would give a guy a chance to try out a knife (factory or custom),he was maybe looking to buy, before he spends the money on one, and finds out it`s not right for him.

Looks like the interest level is not all that high for this. Maybe if we try it, there might be a few more willing participants.

Sounds good to me!

I would with any regular here on John's forum or an established member of BF in good standing.

I would insure my knives & would want them insured on the way back & would of course insure any I had to send back to their owner.
I've had a couple of losses by the USPS,so I'm a firm believer in insurance.

Any other requirements guys?

Sounds like it could be fun.
My accumulation of decent quality blades is currently somewhat limited, but I have a few (and a new Spyderco on the way!:D)

Maybe we could each take a group picture of knives we would be willing exchange, and kind of pick and choose from there.

Probably have to limit it to usa only, I don't mind shipping intentionally but it gets very expensive once you want to insure and track outside of the country.

I'd be willing to play, but I'm afraid it could get a bit expensive for me.

Let me explain.

I've got 25 JK knives (24 different models) and I'd be willing to let people try any of them (excepting the JKCBK) - so that's 24 JK knives I'd be willing to loan out for a trial. And that isn't counting other maker's models that I own (another 125 or so knives - just counting the fixed blades)(I'd probably loan out most of those other knives too).

I doubt that I'd want to try other knives. Most of the time I order the knife that catches my eye - and I really struggle with the possibility of damaging someone else's property, so I'm very reluctant to participate from that end of the spectrum.

So I could potentially spend over $150 just shipping my knives around - which is pretty close to the price of a new knife.

Given the possible expenses and the possibility of damage/loss, I'd prefer that the recipient pays shipping/insurance both ways.

I'd be much more comfortable that way.

I'd likely particpate (as far as loaning out knives) even if I end up paying the outgoing shipping costs, but I'd severely limit the number of knives I'd be willing to loan out.

Another possibility would be using this trial method as a means to raise money for Hanna.

Each borrowed knife is accompanied by a donation to Hanna (say $10) (paid by the borrower). Assuming it costs $8 for shipping/insurance (each way) - borrowing a knife for several weeks would cost the borrowers something along the lines of $26. That isn't bad at all - and it helps Hanna.

tahts, that's a very good point, I like your donation suggestion, and recipient paying the shipping seems fair,

here's my thought, if it's a one way trade (i.e your loaning but not getting ) we could make it a "policy" that the recipient pays for the shipping? that way you can do a one for one like me and sean did and both are out the same money, or you can loan something and not be out any? Seems only fair

thanks

I would agree that in the one way loan, the recipient should pick up the shipping and insurance both ways.

Also, while the person who is the borrower should take care not to damage or abuse the knife, I also wouldn't offer up something like a safe queen or something with sentimental value that you would be upset with someone else using. I think the main idea is to be able to get a feel for the knife and how it performs typical tasks that it was designed for.

We can see what works best as far as parameters go once we do a few swaps.
