interest in forged blades for newer makers?

I don't want this to be a sales pitch and get me in trouble, but I thought this was the best place to post this query of mine.

Since I'll be moving the entire shop soon, I'm trying to clean things out that I don't really need to take with me. Part of that is a couple drawers full of blades... I love forging and it's very easy for me to start several blades in the fire but then lose interest in finishing them.

I'm wondering if some of the newer makers around here could advise me if blades like this are something they'd be interested in, and if so--- in what condition? Is this the kind of thing a guy would want annealed so he could file/shape/grind to his desire? Heat-treated but left with some wiggle room for personal finishing? Completely ground and ready for hand-finishing and a handle???

If I actually put any of these up for sale it will be in the exchange area, but I'm trying to get an idea if this is worth my time to mess around with or not.

Thanks! :)

BTW- Stacy, if this is pushing the line I'll gladly let this thread move to the exchange... I just wasn't sure. :)

I'd be interested in some forged blanks that have all the forge residue (for lack of proper term) remaining, in various sizes.. I'll assume its annealed since its forged but I wouldn't want it heat treated..

some fullers and even hammer marks ok with me.. sounds like a good idea, you do the stuff you enjoy shape it mold it and let someone else bring the rest to life !!:)

Nick, I would be interested as well, in any state after you forge the bevels. Do let us know when you post them in the exchange.

I forgot it didn't happen without pics ;) LOL

This is just a rough idea of the kind of stuff I'm talking about...

Depending on the price i would be interested. Annealed, though. this would be great for trying new stuff on.

Hi Nick,

I'd be interested in some of your blanks, especially if they hadn't been heat treated. Especially hamonable (1080, 1095 -- is that a word? :)) or damascus...

Yes, I would be interested as well. In particular, I am looking for something suitable for my son-in-law who serves in the Canadian military.

Thanks for the feedback folks. I guess ~reasonably priced~ is going to be the tricky part here, as I've had a couple emails from folks already but they're talking about prices that are less than the STEEL ITSELF cost me. I'll try to get some better pics and ideas for pricing and post some stuff up later.

Thank you!!! :)

edited to add: in my mind it seems to make sense that the rougher it is, the cheaper it would be. one just whacked with a hammer is going to be less than one forged, rough ground, and clay hardened.

I'd love to have a grind on some rough forged, annealed blades. being new to this I've only used a couple of steels and styles, so this would be perfect to try something new. Definitly put me down for a few.

Thanks for the offer to win ALL these blades Nick! I'll take #63
Thanks

HAHA! I'll take all the rest of the numbers! Seriously, i would be interested in a blade or 2 also. I am still in the "Green " stages of forging, but would be interested in HT or non HT...either way. I'll shoot you an email.

I also would be interested in a few of the rough shaped blades that are annealed with scale on them and all. I can take it from there.

What types of steel are you offering anyways?

Wow... you guys might make this easy on me. I thought I was going to have to grit my teeth and finish grind them all. LOL :)

I actually have a handful of different steels that I like a lot so they're all in this bunch.... Mostly W1, W2, 1084, 1095, and some damascus blades too. From the sounds of the posts here, I might have taken a lot of them too far on the grinder for what folks are interested in.

Oh- just FYI- A blade right out of the forge isn't annealed. I do a couple stress relieving cycles in the forge after hammering to shape, but it's the cycles after that in the digitally controlled salt bath OR digitally controlled Paragon kiln that really bring the steel's structure to something desirable (which is how ALL of these will be :) ).

I'm still trying to figure out pricing... it's hard, I can't afford to give them away, but I want folks to get their $ worth too. :)

Looks like you will have no problem getting rid of them.
Make a price list and photos, and put it up in the exchange. When it is there, post on this thread for those interested to look in the exchange.

Nick - I'd be interested in one of your larger, "as forged" blades if one is available.

Thanks,

Peter

Sounds good Nick.... I'll take them all.... just stack em, tack em and whack em. Folded to 1000+ layers and drawn out to .25 x 1.75 wide please.:p

Messin' as usual.... You are doing a great service to support the the less forgeunate, brother!
