As my son ages up into a time when he and I can spend more vast amounts of time outdoors hunting, backpacking, and camping I am becoming more interested in possibly getting a custom hatchet and knife made. Really never looked into this before and not really sure what I need to look for in the guy/gal to make it or what questions to ask to make sure it is the heirloom type set my son will cherish with his kids. Any thoughts and recommendations?

I have been looking but have yet to find any close enough to drive to for me. I am in Eastern NC about 100 miles from Nags Head.

There are a pile of awesome makers on this site that will work with you. Most will ask YOU the questions. The process is fun and quite rewarding. Just go to the for sale section and find a style you like and send them a message. I have used a few of BF's finest and they do not disappoint!!

I have owned customs from these makers and they are beautiful!! Off the top of my head--

JK
KFU
Garrison (Gimmejr) My go to guy!!
Garavelle
Big Chris
Robert Carter

I know Jk does his version of a utility hatchet and he can match the handles on the hunting knife too. A Kephart and a hatchet would be awesome to hand down. Or have a matching set made for father and son.

That was my thought about the handing it down but the matching set idea is a good one too because I have 2 kids now so that may be the better option

check the knife makers for sale section. good stuff there with a big range of prices. find a maker you like, and ask them to make something for you.

Not sure of price range you are considering but here's a super nice set made by Mastersmith James Rodebaugh that was recently featured in Blade Magazine. Jim's a first class bladesmith and sheathmaker
along with being an avid hunter and outdoorsman who knows what's needed in a good hunter/hatchet set.
