hi I’m newish to the forums. I’ve been quitely browsing them for a few months and I just want to learn all I can about knives! I was wondering if you guys could recommend me any articles/websites/videos to just learn more? Also sorry if this is the wrong forum I didn’t feel like it would really fit anywhere else?

In all honesty there is no better place to learn about knives than here at BFC. It's a very diverse group of members from makers to owners, CEOs, engineers, custom bladesmiths. Just about every aspect of the community and hobby as it were is represented here and the members are more than helpful with any questions and help even setting up a shop. Youtube is helpful and there are other blacksmith/bladesmith tutorials about grinding and forging, collecting and repairing. It's all available just for the asking, just gotta kniw what to ask.

I recommend the book "How to make knives" by Richard Barney and Robert W Loveless. It is very affordable and chock full of great information! Google it and buy it!

I would start with blade shapes and knife types first. Pick up info on steels as you can. Spyderco and AG Russell are good places for info. This sub-forum works for your purpose, but the traffic is generally kind of low as compared to "General".

One of the biggest advantages of learning here on the forums is that it is somewhat more self correcting than just a youtube video, or an older book. Lots of the basics have not changed, but we have members here who work on the cutting edge (pardon the pun) of modern methods and tech. While there are often disagreements, those can be educational too, as you will see how each member views a subject. Like anywhere there are some members who post things that are a little on the controversial side, but you'll see that some of those people get results and respect, and you'll soon weed out those who are just typing to make themselves feel better.

Welcome!

Start reading this forum:
Bernard Levine's Knife Collecting & Identification

A couple more books that show some stuff you should know are Boye's "Step by Step Knifemaking" which gives you a good idea of how knives are made, and Witcher's "Counterfeiting Antique Cutlery" which shows a lot of the tricks you need to know about fakes.

This is a place where you can learn just about anything about knives, steel, handle materials, ect. The guys on here eat, sleep, and breath cutlery. They are very knowledgeable. Try Youtube man! Try Cedric and Ada, Nutnfancy, Cutlerylover, Preparedmind101, ect. They are all pretty good in my opinion. You will be spending countless dollars in no time! lol

Yup. Just keep reading here. As Insipid Moniker Insipid Moniker and 22-rimfire 22-rimfire mentioned, AG Russell's site has a Steel Chart and Knife Encyclopedia that are phenomenal, and the Spyderco site's EDGE-U-CATION is great too.

Those are great "general" sources.

I'd pass on magazines, their content is too advertiser-driven.

And, while the sources others have given are great, they are very specific. I'd hold off on those 'till you have a better "general" grasp.

Then if you want to know about "antique knives" you can go to Levine's book or subforum here, or about making knives, you can go to Boye's book, etc.

Have fun. I'd say "read more, post less" but you only have 2 posts! :D (And its something we usually suggest to people who are annoying and you aren't ! )

When I'm in a mood to hear about knife stuff I watch Walter Sorrels on YouTube

But really the best way is probably just listen to people talk and google what you don't understand

Welcome from a fellow newish member. I’ve found the search feature to be very helpful. Just about anything I thought of asking has already been asked
