What are some nice areas to live and work in surrounding and including Phoenix, Mesa, and Scottsdale? What areas are good to stay away from?
By "nice" I mean less crime and less pollution.

Thanks.

I am in Tucson and so can only speak about Phoenix in limited terms. Scottsdale is nice, but $$$. I think Mesa is much less expensive, and with that you do get more crime, etc. Phoenix proper is ok, although it would depend on where you are living since like all places, it has its good and bad areas, good and bad schools, etc.

In general, Phoenix is hotter then Tucson and certainly has MUCH greater traffic issues. Traffic can be a PITA and it helps to generate a good amount of pollution. And when traffic-generated pollution is not the issue, a good dust storm may occasionally roll through. I would try to stay close to where you are going to work just for the traffic reason alone. Of course, there is a lot more to do in Phoenix and the women are vastly superior to most you'll find in Tucson.

Aren't knife laws concerning autos and balis really friendly there too?

Yes. They are legal to own and carry in Arizona. You can buy a Benchmade auto in the cutlery store at the local mall if you are willing to pay MSRP .

Southern Arizona has a lot of crime related to the smuggling of people and drugs into the United States, stolen cars and drug related violence being two of the big problems.
