Hey Jeff,

Read your article in the latest SWAT about the need for a new legit survival .22. I'd really like to get a good compact/break-downable .22, but am having trouble finding what I'm looking for in the current "survival rifle" market. Good work. I hope A good gun manufacturer sees this article. I think a great prospect for a survival .22 would be to put Rugers new 10/22 compact http://www.ruger.com/Firearms/FAProdView?model=1168&return=Y into an after market folding stock. Idk if anyone makes an after market folding stock for the 10/22 compact, but i think that could be a stout little short gun.

When I think of a "survival rifle" I think a lever or bolt action .22 would be better than semi auto.

Sure love my Ruger 10/22.

I have it tricked out with a goofy folding stock right now. :)

GREAT Rifle.

I'm not saying the 10/22 is a bad gun, but a lever/bolt .22 will function with much less maintenance than a semi.

I should have read the whole post LOL

Any link to Jeff's article?

RMC, great... Again, I sure like my 10/22. But if you prefer a bolt action no skin off my back.

Jake, you can trick out a 10/22 a million different ways. :)

Havn't read the article. But why doesn't anybody make a .223/20 gauge over under folding rifle like the m6 w/ out the dumb stock and trigger.

The Savage 24 Combo-Gun did come in combinations like .12 Ga. / .223 Remington and .20 Ga. / .30-30 Winchester, for example and IIRC.

I have called Springfield Armory two times within the last 18 months trying to speak with someone about bringing the M6 Scout back, they are more interested in making more 1911 Clone Safe Queens.

I agree, the Springfield M6 in .22LR/410 (or .22 hornet), I dont have one, I have been looking for one of these for a while. I have heard and read positve feedback about it. Handeled one a long time ago, wish I had bought it then. Too bad. Maybe Keltec will think something up. Have you looked at their new .308 (sorry to drift from the topic!).

With a small screwdriver and a hex wrench the barrel comes right off the 10/22. For purely "survival", not tactical, you could easily pack one into a small pack or tube and make a great all-purpose survival gun.

BTW- H&R also makes several multi-use-survival rifle/shotgun combos.

I was considering a Henry Survival rifle but have been reading mixed reviews on its performance. I've also been thinking that a 22 pistol might do well.
Any opinions of using something such as a Browning BUckmark in a survival situation? Keep it in a bug out bag and use it to hunt small game?
I've got a 10/22 but I think its too big to lug around with me and not exactly discreet.

Jeff c, You're right I've had some experience with the multiple options of accessorizing a 10/22.

Testosterone, I like those buckmarks. Something like that or a good .22lr revolver might be pretty nice to have.

I can't wait to read this article - last year when everyone was scrambling to buy up AR's or whatever they could get their hands on(I had no need to do so - have collected and used those evil Black{and green)guns for years) I went out and picked-up a new 10/22 in a nice full camo finish. It dawned on me that I didn't have a really good .22 as I had (foolishly) traded my tricked-out 10/22 years ago, and that just wouldn't do if things get dicey in the next few years.

IMHO the "lowly" .22 is, for all practical purposes(outisde of zombie attack of course) the ultimate survival gun. A new model with that in mind would be excellent!!

Hey now, .22lr is perfect for zombie attacks. Objective is to destroy the brain. Hyper velocity rounds will enter the skull and ricochet around inside doing more brain damage than a larger round that goes threw. Range is limited, but zombies have no ranged attack. Zombies far away are no threat. Recoil is non existant allowing for fast follow up shots. More importantly .22lr ammunition is cheap easily stockpiled, and above all light and easy to carry thousands of rounds.

Well, then it's perfect all around!:D

There is nothing to like about the 1100.00 price tag for a survival rifle either. A survival rifle has to be cheap enough for the masses to make it marketable for that purpose.

The perfect price point for a survival .22 would be under 200.00, preferably in the 159.99 price range.

Check this out,

http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=139379568

Found on Gunbroker, called the Crossover Mark 1, a 12G. and .223 combo, pump action, hold 4 rounds of 12G. and takes AR mags. Its a cool idea, but I don't like pump action AR15.

I actually like my basic model Henry .22 as a survival rifle. It's tube fed, so no messing with mags. It's low maintenance, accurate, and built very well.

HS .22 revolver, or a Ruger 22/45. As accurate as any skimpy folding .22 and more reliable, durable and overall quality construction.

Well said, agree 100%

If I were rich I would love the neptun-primus drilling SxS 12g, over 30.06 with 22lr insert. SWEET, and it can be had for the reduced price of $19,700 towards the bottom here http://www.drillinghotline.com/new2.shtml The Don Haldeman above it also looks nice, but not as nice as the neptun
