Today I have happened to find this book:

Firearms, Traps and Tools of the Mountain Men
by Carl P. Russell

It contains a whole chapter (tens of pages) of interesting info on the axes (trade axes, hatchets, tomahawks, felling axes) and their history.
He refers to archeological finds, so it appears that the info provided is well researched (hopefully is indeed so).

The historical info provided is broader than that regarding the mountain men era and the tools the mountain men used.

Any chance of scanning a few relevant pages and posting them for our perusal? Is the author a bona fide historian or museum researcher or an outdoor/survival type magazine writer?

That's it. Mine is a university press reprint from the 70s. Originally published in the 60s, I believe, but I can't find mine offhand. THe author was something in national parks, and his shtick was to use archaeology and literature together. Lot's of drawings from Metallic Implements of the New York Indians, by Beauchamp.
