I purchased this amber peach seed jigged bone Damascus trapper a few years ago. I really like its aesthetics, which is the reason I bought it. I obtained it through a trusted seller, who claimed it is a Case factory sample or prototype. Date stamp is 2002. The tang lacks a pattern number. There is a small caliber hole drilled through the bolster.
It came with a white thin cardboard tag secured via a cotton string through the bolster hole, with “Ladder Stainless” hand written on the tag. Case did release some stainless steel Damascus trappers (I have one) but this particular knife appears to be carbon Damascus and not stainless steel Damascus. The liners are brass, not stainless steel. Bolsters appear to be nickel silver.
The individual components appear authentic to my eye. It could simply be a blade delete from a two blade Damascus trapper, which may explain why there is no pattern number (the deleted spey blade would have been stamped with the pattern number). Case certainly produced amber peach seed trappers in 2002. However, I am not aware of any Damascus trappers from 2002, which may argue against this being a blade delete.
I truly like the knife whether or not it may be an authentic factory sample. It would be a big plus if it is indeed authentic but if it is not it won’t deter my enjoyment of it. I do not plan on selling it but I would like to know its status for accurate records and of course to flag it for future generations if it is not (if it is not authentic it is simply too nice to destroy).
I would appreciate any comments or feedback on this interesting piece.
