The ABS competition brought together 5 guys who have all placed First or Second in cutting competitions around the country.

One of the competitors, Kevin Cashen, brought with him a very interesting knife...

A very nice Recurve Bowie made of Damascus steel.

Kevin was asked why he chose Damascus. He did it to shatter the stereotype that Damascus can't cut as well as other high carbon steels - and that it's just for show.

You can't see the patterning too well in this pic, but it's definitely damascus.

And a very happy Andrew Lynch holding the Recurve Bowie...:D

good stuff. Thanks for sharing Pend.

I've never made it to a blade, I had no idea there were competitions too. Pretty cool stuff.

yeah, you can just change it to the other one called:

Dean - oops! you are correct. I've edited the thread to correct it. Thanks!

So how did my Cherokee Brother Ray Kirk do in the cutting competition?:(

Ray wasn't feeling too good and got DQ'd on the 2x4 test because of a rolled edge. There was no mercy at the judges table. They made Cashen prove that the metallic fuzz on his blade was aluminum and not a rolled edge by softly scraping it off. Nice set of knives, though.

Good to see that you saw the cutting competition Pen; I was so enamored with all of the pretty knives that I missed it! I read the program after I got to my hotel on Saturday night and saw that it had just been held that afternoon and kicked myself for missing it :grumpy: . Oh well, I'll be there next year. I did make the throwing competition, it was quite a treat. They ended up having to go into double overtime for a tie-breaker.

The 2x4 is probably pine.

I suspect that a khukuri could put a nice dent on the 8 second mark. Has anyone tried it?

I actually witnessed the chopping and he REALLY rolled right thru that 2x4!! He kinda looked a little crazed but the 2x4 was GONE! He probably would have done good on the plastic bottle suspended from a thread but the knife turned in his hand.

In my opinion almost all of these guys had the bottle waaay too low. It was at the end of the cut where most of the power is past. They should have put it in the middle of the arc where they would have had 100% power.

Still the blade was beautiful and performed excellently! I'm glad I was there to see it!

Dan/Vince,

Just viewed the chopping vids again and had a few questions. These are in the interests of trying it with a khuk, maybe a UBE, when I get it back with it's new sheath.

Remember that I'm looking at a VERY small picture.

1) The wood looks more like a 2x6 than a 2x4. Illusion?
2) Is the board anchored at all, or held down by it's own weight?
3) Is it required to wear blue to compete?
4) If you had to speculate, how much of Cashen's victory was technique, as opposed to a superior knife? He was a lot more 'enthusiastic' in his chopping than Fitch.
5) What kind of knife did Fitch use?

Vince, you mention a plastic bottle. Was there another competition?

Thanks for putting up with all the questions.

Joe
