Acting on a tip from a fellow forumite, I came across this Schrade Walden USA small stockman. It is stamped 818M on the back of the tang. Have not found it in any catalogs or price lists. The unique feature for this 2 3/4" stockman pattern is slanted bolsters. Anyone else have any info on this one? I'm sure the M in 818M is for Marine Pearl, an acrylic imitation pearl handle.

Great find! And having exposed pivot pins, is most likely made before the Swinden key patent.

Cool! Wish I had spotted that one! I think pretty much all the celluloid-handled knives preceded the Swinden construction.

That would put this one in the 1950's then most likely. If it was much earlier, it would probably have the SCHRADE WALDEN NY stamping minus the USA, and no stamp on the back side. Another detail is the liners are not milled. Just a side note. I don't think the 818 number seems right for a three blade knife either.

In the fifties, the first digit reflected the number of blades. "8" would be correct for three blades. "9" was four, "7" was generally two.

I hope this is not inappropriate to post a knife for sale here. I don't have a horse in this race. Just trying to be helpful to whoever might be interested in this 818 model. Maybe thawk would like to start a collection of 818s? This knife just came up on my ebay feed. It's a little rough. They are interesting with the slanted bolsters and all.

While I cant tell for sure what the material on the 818M handles are, the pitting on the 818M blade sure looks to be the result of outgassing from a celluloid handle. The only other damage like that I've seen is from salt water. I had a beautiful set of pearl like handles steak knives from my mother’s house that I had put up in their box. Found them a few years later almost totally eaten away and the handles had totally disintegrated. Great article on cell in Knife World this month.
