a british officer in borneo or malaya in the second world war was carrying out a close target recce with one of his gurhkas, he told the gurhka to wait there for him, "he'd be back" the officer was shot and wounded shortly after. a dozen years later during the "malayan emergency" british troops came across the gurhka still waiting, he had a hut and a small vegetable garden and was living quite hale and hearty. he explained his situation, his old platoon leader was now commanding the regiment, so they got the officer up there to confirm the story. when they saw each other the officer broke down in tears, the gurhka, somewhat nonplussed said "well, you said you'd be back, i knew you wouldn't forget me, and here you are"

Great story, reminds me of the ones Id occaisionally hear about Japanese soldiers being found still manning thier posts in deep jungle in PI, many years after the war.

Sure wish we had a hole bunch of those gents on our side. Talk about dependable.:)

Here's a story in a similar vein told to me by a Cuban friend who served in Viet Nam with the US Army. Seems some of the guys that wound up in that fight didn't speak very good english. One young fellow, a "sixty" gunner, didn't understand what he was being told one day when the order came to fall back to the LZ for dust off. In the confusion of the firefight, and the platoon's haste to get out of Dodge, he got left behind. Dawn the next day, two platoons got inserted to retake the ground. They found him still very much alive, still at his gun, which was completely depleted of ammo, and surrounded by many deceased VC. He said the last clear instructions he had from his sergeant were to keep up a covering fire with the pig.
I reckon he took his job serious.;)

That bastard war movie, Apocalispe now, had at least one good idea. Dedicated to this story, Kurzt, the fictious hero back in the dark depths of jungle, notifies his high command that, 'we could take this war with one quarter of the people, but good people."
