Got this new resto project in the mail today. 3.5# Great Neck. It came with a really interesting metal wedge. It may not have meant to be an axe wedge at all. It has a hook that hung over the poll end of the eye, with the rest pounded into the kerf slot. It's in the same orientation in the photo as it was in the eye. Anyone seen one like this before? I guess the hook might help keep the head from sliding off the handle. It has letters embossed on it, "SAWI" is all I can read. It's too rusted over to read the others. I tossed it in the pickle bucket with some other heads I got picklin.' I'll update this post when it comes out.

Interesting. With the hook and hole it seems like it would be nice and easy to remove if necessary. Do you plan on reusing the wedge?

That's it Cooperhill! It seems to be in decent condition aside from the rust. I'll reuse it on an experimental basis. If it doesn't work out it's easy enough to remove and replace with a wooden one.

I have seen a wedge similar to that, with a little "lip", but not that one. Would that be so if you had to you could get the metal wedge out perhaps a little easier?

It certainly came out easy enough. A pliers and a screwdriver was all it took.

Found these in a new purchase - labeled Crucible cast steel (think this is a bench hatchet. It's beveled on both sides). Not sure of the age but I think it's one of my oldest axes.

yeah, i keep a sardine can the bench for screws and nails and staples and whatever i take out of the eyes.

I think I've seen these in the bottom of those boxes of miscellaneous rust you find at boot/yard sales.

Now I know what they are, I'll probably never see them again!

I know what I'm going to do...take advantage of a great opportunity to razz you a bit! :D ;)

I've never see that vid before so thanks for sharing it....twice.
