It's interesting how things change as we age.... or as time goes by. I remember when I was in high school, my science teacher telling us that every 7 years or so, our taste buds change, which is why sometimes we like certain foods that we hated when we were young. I wonder if that is the same with all our taste "buds". I took out my Case CV Soddie Jr. today to carry, and I used it a few times, and to be honest..... it didn't do it for me anymore!! As good, reliable, hardworking and classic a pattern as it is, it just didn't give me that same feel I get when I carry my other patterns. I'm still a Peanut guy, but I love my Stockman (closet stockman guy, me thinks), my SAKs, and even my Old Timer lockback (I've actually grown rather fond of that knife). However, I think I've moved on from my soddie. Shame. I loved that pattern for a long time, but now I missed more then one blade, I missed a point on the blade, I missed the smaller sizes, I missed...... you get the point.
Has anyone else ever gone through this? Falling out of love with a once cherished pattern? What's happening to me?

I've carried the same two knives for many years, a small fixed blade and an Opinel. 5 years on the fixed blade, and ~18 yrs on the Opinel. No desire at all to ever switch or use anything different.

In short, you're probably crazy. :p

Couldn't have said it better myself, Bob. That's exactly what I was thinking today.

My taste in knives changes from every now and then also. For a long time I would only carry Schrade, or Camillus knives. During high school I carried an Old Timer 3ot a good bit. I used it in shop class and in science, but also afterwards while fishing, or working at the store where I worked. I liked it so much I must have 10 of them packed away just in case I ever need a new one. After high school I became devoted to my Camillus TL-29, and carried it until this winter. Now neither of them do it for me, I still grab them on occasion, but more often than not I carry my Case small Texas jack. That is kind of funny because when I was 7 or 8 I almost always had a two blade jack in my pocket. So I guess our taste do change, but my taste are like the seasons in a way, because they always seem to come full circle. Joe

I'm kind of funny i'll carry the same knife or pattern for an extended time and then all of a sudden i'll go on a knife binge and might carry 5 different patterns in 5 days but this is usually short lived, there are certain knives i always come back to. you've heard of comfort food? i guess these are my comfort knives
case serpentine stockman, cv yellow scales
case large stockman, as above.
case sodbuster JR or SR. cv when i can get it but the SS is just fine
spyderco endura, plain edge "I apologize i know it's not traditional but i like it"
buck 110/112
schrade sharpfinger, real schrade not that chinese crap.
well that's about it, yep i'm a knifeaholic.

My taste has changed greatly in the past several years. I'm not sure just why, but my taste in knives has went to the smaller ones. I used to think nothing of a almost 5 inch Eye-Brand sodbuster, or a number 10 Opinel. But then I found myself buying the Sodbuster junior sizes, and going to a number 8 Opinel, then a number 7. I also went from a buck 301 stockman to smaller 3/14 inch stockmen, then to peanuts. These days a peanut and a sak do all I want or need to do.

My taste in guns has done a similar downsizing.

Heck, I went from my last bike, a Harley sportster, to a PX150 Vespa, and I'm having more fun than ever! Go figure.

I even like brocoli now.

We change as we get older. I'm not sure if its life's experiance coming into play, and we are going through a learning prosess that continues all our life, or maybe we really are nuts.

Or maybe what we need at different stages of our life changes.

But then you have the old timers who carry one knife for 40 years. Of course they were not living with the handycap of the disease of Knife knuticus degenerous.

BROCCOLI? Sheesh Jacknife...;):D

My tastes have changed greatly. I have actually sold off about half of my slipjoints, (gasp... BLASPHEMY!), a couple of Doziers, ( I hear more screams...) and several "tactical" folders. (what's that?... applause?) I have also sold off a couple of safe queens that I would NEVER use in order to finance the purchase of knives that I DO use. I still regret selling my stag Cover though.... BUT, I'd NEVER use it.

What have I been buying? 99.9% Bark River knives. I rarely carry a slippy as my "sheeple" knife anymore. I have a small Barkie FB that serves that role. I still love my Queen Cattle King Stockman, I will carry that once in awhile just because. I have a few Dr. spatula patterns that I'll keep, just because.

I still have a few Doziers, a tactical folder or two, maybe even a few customs that I will sell. I just don't use them anymore. (feel free to PM me if curious...) Yep, my tastes have changed. Now, I just want the life that will allow me to use the users I have.;)

I too have had certain times in my life where I would carry the same knife for a few years and never even think about carrying something else.
Then for some reason I would decide that I had to use something different. Not because there was anything wrong with the one I was using before, it was just time for a change....True, I think our taste and perspective change as we get older. Nothing wrong with that though, a little variety is a good thing.
Funny thing is, now I'm back to edc'ing the same knife I carried daily for about 4 years. After putting it away for almost 5 years.

I know that as I get older, I truly make decisions based on what I want.. When I was younger a lot of decisions were influenced by what others thought. Still like to learn as much about something as I can but the final decision will be mine, even if it goes against what most other people are doing.

Yup, my taste has also changed. 7 years ago I thought the SAKs were silly and not very useful, now a small Vic. Cadet is probably my most carried knife. Heck I even have resorted to putting a shot of sweet Vermouth and prefering it, in my glass of gin.

Well, I started with trappers... and thought I couldn't use anything shorter than 4" handle, figured it would be too uncomfortable... Now I have a 3" canoe thats fine. Started only using 1 blade, but then I started using the second to eat with... Now I'm stuck needing two blades, one for utility/"dirty" work and one kept clean for food. Can't seem to go back to one. But I've tried more than 2 blades, and always have a blade that doesn't get used... I never liked lockers, but have grown quite fond of a wharncliffed cheetah. Can't seem to carry a trapper since i found the moose; no functional diference but it just seems right.

Most used knife at home is a SAK like a clasic SD but with LED and pen... SMALL... but all so useful. That and all you peanut pushers ;) have me wanting a small Case pen with scissors. And to be honest, I think I could live with it as a singular EDC.

When I first got into quality and custom knives several years ago, I was carrying a 12" bowie... then to a 3" skinner I made... back to 4" nessmuk, and some time last year I found that the folder was getting all the work done, so I no longer carry a fixed blade... and now the progression to quite possibly being happy with a small penknife.

Change in lifestyle and work? no not really, it ain't that easy excuse. ;)
Age change? yes.
Change in maturity? yes.
But more growing up for me than growing older, since I am just finding who I am (turned 23) and what I actually use, instead of what i want to be, and think I need.

G.

I'm still all over the place with my EDC knives, and I've plenty to choose from, but the SAK seems to be a constant, I always have one near at hand.

I was a SAK guy from childhood to my mid-twenties. From then until recently (mid/late thirties) I was a diehard multitool guy. I still have and use a multitool, but I don't carry it as an edc nearly as much as I used to, even just a year ago, unless I know I'm likely to need it. I have returned to the SAK and have also been a peanut guy since November.

The multitool gets carried if I am motorcycling, camping, building something or doing yardwork, etc., but the simpler knives seem to suit me fine the rest of the time. I think part of it might be not so much a change in tastes, but in lifestyle. My hobbies and leisure activities still involve a lot of tinkering and getting my hands dirty, but my professional life has become pretty white collar.

Just melt some Velveta over it and some Pace Picante sause, and its great. Really, trust me.:D

Velveeta!?!

Alright, time for intervention.

Just plain butter and salt are dandy, but if you must have cheese -- it must actually be CHEESE!!

The word is cheddar. Sharp, medium, or mild, as you like it. Actually, if one is just coming off Velveeta, it should probably be mild at first, just to keep those taste buds from going into shock at having something with flavor.

Actually, with the Pace in there, you should be able to handle more flavorful cheese, and save the Pace for eggs.

Velveeta -- a culinary travesty. :D;)

My taste in sheath knives has changes greatly within the last year. My taste in slipjoints on the other hand has remained the same.
I used to think a sheath knife under 4 inches inst good for anything, now I carry one of my little finns instead of the full size Ka-Bar or Buck 119. Then I came here and you guys confirmed my thoughts.

Peter

Heck, when he originally said Velveeta, I thought he meant a porn star! ;)
