One of the outside demo's from Blade 2001 was a traditional Japanese sword demonstration. I took this series of photos and they came out well. I hope you enjoy them.

Fourcycle, nice shots, great sequence! I'd love to get into test cutting someday.

Thanks for the post.

Take care,
Tom

Again, good shots, Fourcycle...

Is that James Williams of Bugei? That katana seems to have their trademark long tsuka...

Thank you all for your appreciation. I shot these with my Sony Mavica. It has a multi-frame mode. On the camera you can see then scroll from frame to frame.

When you export then though you get nine sequential frames at 1/9th size. Makes an interesting photo series even better.

Excellent flicks! Thanks a lot for sharing them with us. Really appreciated.

I didn't look quite closely enough to check whether or not they had lanyards to keep them close if they lost their grip(s). Would think liability insurance for that demo -- w/out lanyards might be stiff.

Someday -- I hope -- I'll make it to Blade. Must be an incredible experience. Glad you had a good time.

Bugs,

There were two men who were doing the cutting. The one shown is the master, the other one of his students. Neither of them used a lanyard of any kind. I was as you can see, off to the side but given the broad sweep of their cutting swing was probably still in harms way.

Gee, it seemed safe at the time....LOL

Hey Robert,
Were you at the Sword Cutting Demonstration?
I asked around but no one had seen you. I was really looking forward to meeting you in person. I really appreciate the thread you posted about my knives over in the sword forum. You remember? Maybe next time.

It sounds trite but I bet you're in WAY more danger crossing the street--I can't imagine he has less control over that blade than the idiot who was behind me yesterday had over his several-ton truck.
Cool photos.
