Interesting, Larry. Thanks for posting it. My only other comments:

I can recall when Smith & Wesson marketed a really fine line of knives. Those products were worthy of that respected old name.

John Deere knives are popular among among collectors of that tractor company's paraphenalia and memorabilia. They are less in demand by anyone who knows knives.

Makes me wanna throw up, thinking of the various Schrade logos on Taylor's website, next to those two mentioned above.

What is there to comment on? This is exactly what was planned when the new bank who took over Schrades paper and then closed them, as well as the parts Taylor and the other players had planned. AHHH SOOO. You know I remember a picture from one of the knife periodicals from 20 or more years ago with Mr Taylor standing in a dirt floor building in some oriental country with an oriental man shaking hands they had just completed a deal to make Bali Song knifes over there and ship them here. Yup it is an amazing success story. I give Mr Taylor credit he started selling out of the trunk of his car. If I would have been smart enough or inclined to do business the same way with the same people chances are I would have had the money to buy the Schrade collection or the IP in fact perhapes Schrade would have not gone under at all, but it is all conjecture. The fact is, this is reality. I would guess that the way we think and act is going to lend itself to our getting more doses of reality in the future.

It is amazing how history repeats itself and usually is the same but its interpretation changes with whatever is in vogue. Truth it seems has very little to do with anything unless it just happens to be the most palatable alternative at the time. 35 years ago our relatives and loved ones were killing and were being killed in Viet nam. Why would anyone believe that a childs feelings for there fathers killer would somehow abate over that time, until, now these people have each others welfare in there hearts. Well I am an old guy and perhapes a bit jaded, but you know what, I must be wrong . It seems that the general concensus must be correct and I am just a cynic, yup I guess the relatives of all those folks who got vaporized in Hiroshima and Nagasaki ( spelling?) really have our best interests at heart and I am just as sure that all the relatives of those who now sleep in a memorial to a lowly act of cowardice on the USS Arizona are just a magnanamous. I know I am heck, golly, forgive and forget. No I am afraid some further evolution on mankinds part is needed before we are that higher order of entity of eternal forgivness. It seems whatever the subject we respond in the same idiotic manner with this DUH what a surprise attitude. I just read where a woman spent 50,000 dollars to clone her cat. Ok forget the thousands who die each day from hunger. She is no worse than anyone else it is her money to spend and just like myself who indulges in knife collecting to the point of stupidity I do so because it gives me pleasure and I can. The real point here is human nature. Here is an example, Ask most people if human cloning is going on and ( if they have thought about it at all ) they will say it is against the law it is not moral to play God and no it is not happening. Let me ask you a question when in history has any technalogical advance that had become feasible to do, ever been halted or not practiced due to ethical reasons? No what happens is that it gets done, it just costs more so that it is only available to those who can afford it. You can be assured that whatever can be done is being done. Do you think someone with endless money ( like the oil magnates ) is going to use ethical reasons as an excuse if they need a new liver and can get an exact duplicate. Well I do Golly yes after all they are moral and ethical people. ( I can visualize the next OPEC meeting when one member asks "should we raise the price of crude oil?" I am sure all the other members will answer back " Hey is it ethical and moral? ".) It being the holiday season let me conclude with YES Virginia there are motors that do not run on gas, and carbuerators that get 100 miles to the gallon ( and when we start to run out of gas they will appear ) . Yes there are other forms of energy ( and they to will appear.) (NOTE Have you ever wondered why we have several states that are mainly dessert where the sun endlessly bakes the sand you would think that with all that space there would be a few small sunny sections where a few solar cells could be laid out just to save a couple of gallons of oil running those turbines to power all those California Air conditioners. NOPE not until that oil is gone )
Many more things are possible for the extension and improvment of life and if you have enough money they can be made to appear as well. Remember when years ago there were jokes about old sheiks with Harems and the only reason they needed them was because they had Swedish doctors who had some miracle which enhanced there sexual abilitys for many more years that the average man. Just a wives tale, a rumor. That rumor is called VIAGRA and it appeared when a giant segmant of the population ( baby boomers ) started to need it and could afford it.

HUMM Hey Larry I guess I found something to comment on after all. Wow I havent gone off on a tangent like this for some time. Hell this was more like going right out of orbit rather than just off on a tangent. I think I will go up and share a cookie with Buster ( my cat ) Humm he is getting on, now where did I put that special swab for DNA and my check book . HERE BUSTER come here boy. Would you like a little brother to play with. And to all a Good nite. LT

It still sounds to me that Taylor Cutlery bought the Names (trademarks) and not the designs (Design patents). Can someone prove me wrong on this? Please? :(

I think "Intellectual Property" includes all tradmarks and copyrights. This would include product designs, logos, and names. Unless the patents were sold seperately to someone else...

When I see "Made in China" stamped on an Old Timer for the first time, I'll probably throw up.

That is my impression as well. To my knowledge Taylor bought it all and nothing else which would encompass those items was offered at auction. Why is it so hard to accept that this was simply a well constructed plan to take Schrade out of the picture? The knives designs ect were simply part of what came with the package. All they cared about was locking up the name so that no one else could use it. It went for 3.65 million it would seem that figure was high enough to include it all. There was never a plan to make knives here, it is all done overseas. Except for the automatics which are assembled here to circumvent the laws that do not allow these to be imported completed. LT

It's all pretty confusing, if you think about it. There are so many different scenarios that can be constructed from all of this, but if Taylor did, in fact, purchase the trademarks and patents (which is what I heard), then how can it not be an infringement for Camillus to be advertising those 152's that we saw in another thread? Hmmmm.

My guess is that after some 30 years any design patents for the Sharpfinger have expired so Camillus or anyone else can make them, they cannot use the trademarks or copyrights but the design is probably not protected.

Also as far as I know patenting a design is no simple thing, I believe Buck was not granted any patents for the design of their 110 and so the design was widely copied, I wonder is there actually ever was a design patent for the Sharpfinger.

I think we really need a lawyer to tell us in simple terms what it all means. Any Lawyers in the group? Don't worry we wont do any lawyer jokes :D

LT I'm always glad to see you here. Rant on brother.

Anyone got any free samples of that Viagra stuff LT is talking about? I am middle aged after all and I want to do a study on all those rumors your talking about. And what kind of cookie are you sharing with old Buster?

Cloning and stem cell research being banned? Like in this group our springers have been banned since the 50's.. We still get em when we really want to. Next thing you know the govt will try and ban Viagra. (NOT!)

Anyways Glad your all reading the posts and have survived the Holidays.

UH Fan, do you recall seeing Pat. Pend. tang marks on 152's? I have not, but that is not very conclusive. The 152 was unique enough in design, as was the 15OT to recieve a design patent. But they are not forever. I do not know what the current limit is on patent life with all maintenance fees paid on time, but some years back it was reduced. Seems like it is 20 or 25 years. And when a patent expires it becomes public domain. Trademarks are an entirely different matter. I had an inventor sued for infringement some years back by Wal-Mart. He invented a small metal clip to hang sheets of drywall and called them Wal-Frogs. Wal-Mart won. :)

Let’s say you had a relative that had a hotdog stand and he wanted to borrow $1,000 from you to cover the costs of his business. You agree to lend him the $1,000 using his inventory of hotdogs and money owed to him by customers as collateral, and you do so because he keeps telling you this hotdog stand is going good, and is going to do great and make all kinds of money.

Well, what if it turns out the hotdog stand wasn’t doing great, but was in fact bleeding cash all along. And what if to cover your collateral he said that his hotdogs were worth $1.50 each instead of the $1.00 he paid for them, and he also didn’t tell you about money he owed to customers who had returned hotdogs. And what if you found all this out at the same time he asked you for another $1,000.

Would you lend him another $1,000 knowing he wasn’t quite upfront with you about the first $1,000, or would you do what you needed to do to get back as much of your first $1,000 as you could? Would it surprise you to know that any other relative asked did not lend him an additional $1,000 either?

Some kind of evil plan or consipiracy? Nah.

OK you ought to know and I respect your input, personally I believe it was some of both. If my rantings inspire any input at all I figure they might serve some good. I know they make me feel better. Lets just hope the world escapes any further horrors ( like the tidal wave ) I am not sure on the spelling of the other word for it. At least until after the New Year. Now I know it seems strange but how can that many people die and we as individuals not somehow feel the horror and sorrow before we hear about it on television. Dosen't it seem like empathy for our fellow man should somehow enable us to feel such a veil of pain just by the vastness of the suffering. I told you it was strange and reality tells me that this is the way it is. Still it is so SAD SAD SAD. LT Still rambling and Ranting.

HMMMMMM Formerschradeguy has a handle on the real deal. Now lets take it on step further and say that the hot dogs you had were in WIP and not useful for current finished product.
