I was just poking around at Amazon and noticed that the Spyderco Tenacious ranked is #13 in sales in its category, which is: Sports & Outdoors > Hunting & Fishing > Hunting > Hunting Knives.

One could argue that this isn't the right category, but it made me curious to see the entire list.

Here is the Top 25. I think you may find it surprising.

#1 Smith & Wesson CK5TBS Bullseye Extreme Ops 4.1" 40% Serrated Black Tanto Blade
#2 New Swedish Mil. Mora Knife
#3 KaBar USMC Ka-Bar USMC Fighting Knife
#4 SOG Specialty Knives E37T SEAL Pup Elite, Black TiNi
#5 Smith & Wesson SWHRT9B HRT Boot Knife, Black
#6 Smith & Wesson CKSUR1 Bullseye Search and Rescue 10.5"
#7 Cold Steel Rubber Training Military Classic
#8 Buck 110 Folding Hunter, Lockback Folding Knife
#9 Buck 379BRS Solo Folding Pocket Knife
#10 American Tomahawk VTAC Lagana Tactical Defensive Battle Tomahawk
#11 Buck 112 Ranger, Lockback Folding Knife
#12 Cold Steel 53CC The Spike Knife
#13 Spyderco Tenacious Black G-10 Plain Edge Knife
#14 Cold Steel Indian War Club Polypropylene
#15 Buck 277 Folding Alpha Hunter, Rosewood Handle
#16 Masonic Coin Pendent Necklace
#17 Buck 505 Knight Lockback Folding Knife Kabar Fighting/Utility Knife Foliage Green
#19 United Cutlery Bushmaster Ultimate Surival Knife with Flashlight and Kit
#20 Buck 757 Camp Axe
#21 Cold Steel Rajah II Grivory Handle Plain
#22 Schrade Pro Hunter Knife Fixed Blade
#23 Ka-Bar TDI Law Enforcement Serrated Edge Knife
#24 Smith & Wesson CK32C Smith & Wesson Extreme Ops. Karambit Camo with Hawk Bill
#25 Ka-Bar 2-1245-1 Black Tanto Knife

This made me wonder about a category that is more reflective of folding knives, and I found: Sports & Outdoors > Outdoor Recreation > Camping & Hiking > Camping Knives & Tools > Folding Knives. I won't post the list here, but 20 of the Top 25 knives were Victorinox, with Kershaw taking three spots, M-Tech one, and Matrix (never heard of them) the other.

if you ask me, the general person who does not know about knives at all, does not care if its an S30V bead-blasted blade or a rusty nail, will go for price. if its under $40 it will sell. if you need to get a new one next summer so be it. the old one gets thrown out or it goes to a garage sale. disposable and cheap: in that sense, quality=price, no?

The first place I check for Victorinox is actually Amazon, because in my experience they often have the lowest prices. Yes, even compared to ebay.

many people know s&w firearms, and when they see a knife with the same logo, assume it is of the same quality. recognizeablity is very important.

can someone explain #16????

indeed visible proof that the majority of shoppers @ amazon are not particularly influence by mere hype...

is that the one that looks like a baseball bat?

No, that is the Brooklyn Smasher. This is the Indian War Club.

Many Masons are making themselves more visible. The average age of many Lodges is in the 60 to 70's range. Sometimes being anonymous and secretive works against you.

No surprize at all, ipm said it perfectly.

My uncle doesn't give a damn about where it's made or what steel is used, his s&w folder has cleaned two deer with a good working edge. It was about $15.

Does the sales data list the total quantity of sales or any other quantifiers? That #16 is a Mason's necklace tells me that total sales might not be all that much and tells me there is at least one error in the data collection methodology. That #1 has the words black blade, tanto, and extreme ops is completely unsurprising though.
