Interesting sharpening challenge.

Today the wife finally decided that her hoof knife was getting blunt. (I've been trying to tell her this for a while but, who can tell a woman anything ...)

Anyway she asked me to sharpen it today. This is a rather interesting article to sharpen, for those unfamiliar with such things, here is a pic.

Basically the thing has a sideways curve on the blade which turns into a narrow u-turn shape at the end. In addition to this it is chisel ground on the inside of the curve.

After a bit of thought I decided the DMT Aligner was the tool for the job. The narrow stones worked nicely on the straighter parts (freehand, without the clamp) and the round serrations sharpener was perfect for the loop at the end.

"Oh, hey, works like a new one" she says with some surprise when she tried it out. :)

Maybe she's finally getting it that sharp knives are better.

A fun little job for me, win/win situation. :)

Just goes to show you how different women are from country to country. My wife uses a nail clipper. :p:p:p:p:D

Having tried to sharpen one before, I'd say you chose all the right tools and did a great job! I did one years ago using a round slipstone and it took me forever with so-so results!

A fun little job for me, win/win situation. :)

It's fun working out good solutions to interesting problems!

Nice work, tough doing a good job on irregular cutters. My own wife could use one of those "Aha" moments. She told me the other week that she was going to dull up my kitchen knives because they "didn't need to be that sharp, someone could cut their finger off!" after one pretty much dropped on it's own straight through a cantaloupe (?!).

Cantaloupe . . . pffft. My Gerber Mark II dropped "on its own" through my foot. Point down, of course. And I'm still not a fan of dull knives, even after that.

Yes, I sharpen my hoof knife with the flat and round DMT rods and stone, coarse grit . Their not hard metal and will sharpen quickly .
Sam, My Uncle did that once only it went right between his toes, missing everything . He is lucky like that . DM
