Just looking through the CIA WORLD BOOK, I noticed that the majority of countries I looked at the ratio of male/female at birth was 1.05/1.00 (for humans Bruise). Of course it swung the other way after teenage years in the nations I looked at.

Any opinions why?

Maybe evolution's way of dealing with higher male mortality rates? Or perhaps guys just survive the pregnancy better in less-developed nations. Dunno?

I think most males are born with extra fingers and toes. Cutting off several hundered of them must equal one human. Everything is taken into account.

And, in some cultures, alledgedly civilized, amniocentesis is used to determine the sex of the foetus. If it's a girl, then an abortion is performed. Men children are valued more.

We are savages.

Beats the older tradition of putting female babies out along the roadside to die of exposure I guess...

But not by much.

Isn' this what's going on in china right now? I thought i heard somewhere that they were going to lift the ban/"reward program" on having only one child because parents are getting girls aborted because they are not as valuable as males (sons usually take care of the parents, etc). Because of this there might not be enough girls to go around for the next generation of china. Can you just imagine the violence and weirdness that could ensue without the "stress relief" of a female companion? You think competing for a job is bad...think about having to literally fight over a girl! Weird stuff.

I've heard of it in India, too. 60 minutes did a piece a while back. I just don't understand. Then again, I'm living a comfortable life in the most powerful nation the world has ever known. Still, this seems to go beyond cultural differences. :(

The females tend to make the males want to die young. Either through some dangerous courtship rites, or just via the nearest available war.

In china the female will go and live with her husband and his family. Besides that, the male will carry on the family name. The chinese govt. is recognizing the problem over there and is giving incentives (or just lessening the penalties) for female children. Things like "allowing" the male to take the female's name, and allowing the male to live with the female's family. Fat chance.

I saw an episode of oprah. They did a show on adoptiong female children from china.

To think about it, it doesn't take that many countries to make a serious impact in the world - China and India account for a hefty share of Earth's population, if they prefer boys over girls (can't say i don't understand them, with government trying to prevent demographic explosion in every way possible people use every avaliable means to get a child who they think he'll be able to provide them for when they get old). And yet the piopulation there is STILL rising, despite the 1-kid-per-family policy thatr is encouraged and unbalanced structure (too many boys who don't get to ... mate).

Makes me wish the Earth was just 50% larger with current population - there'd be fewer wars, etc., and these issues woudl be less of a concern.

God, America is lucky. Our isolation means that we have far better population density than even Western Europe. I definately see that as a good thing!

It wouldn't last...Mankind is one of those organisms that expands beyond the environments capacity to support it. With fish, as the population exceeds capacity, their growth is stunted and you get ponds full of 2" bluegills. With viruses, they kill their host. We are just following our biological programming. :(

So Nasty,

Do you think that soon society will start to get shorter? :D

Or will we kill the earth?

namaarie, could you send me an email. I'd like to discuss your Location tag ;).

Now back to our scheduled programming.

Sent man! Pardon if I don't reply too quick. Sometimes I don't check my email very often.

I believe the birth rates regarding sex determination change, but that there has always been a slightly higher ratio of men to women. "Always" may be because as whatever mechanism is doing the adjustment, always adjusts for our constant wars, in which men die.

Maybe the more girl babies you kill the more will be born.

I'd think a girl baby better able to survive childbirth and womb than a male.
