Dan, you would LOVE hangin' out at the American Society for Metals just east of here. At 10,000x a "smooth" surface looks like the Rockies.

Dan you oughta see a magnified pic of a piece of chipped obsidian. Almost as smooth as the volcanic glass it's chipped from! :eek: :cool:

If you can find it in a local library, Leonard Lee's Complete Guide to Sharpening has several great b&w photos of highly magnified edges, including a comparison of edges left by various sharpening stones and methods. Most of the photos are of wood chisel edges, but the differences between various grits are striking. He also includes photos of edge oxidation and the surfaces of different sharpening media.
