Intergrated Clips have failed

Back in 1992/1993 I bought two Spyderco Enduras, one plain edge and one fully serrated edge. Both blades are marked G2 Stainless and the clips are intergrated (molded in) into the handles.

After about 6-months of using the knives, I noticed a faint crack at the base of each clip and as time went on, the cracks became more noticeable. I got other knives as time went on and stopped using the Enduras. Well, I took the Enduras out of my knife storage box last Thanksgiving and started carrying/using them again. Over the last 2-weeks the clips on both knives have worsened to the point that one separated completely from it's handle and the other was so close to separating that I went ahead and took it off. I sanded the areas where the clips joined the handles and frankly, they ride in my pocket much better.

Has anyone had this happen to their early Spyderco knives with intergrated clips on handles? I think I heard in the past that this was common with the early intergrated clips on some Spyderco knives.

This is in no way a complaint. Just seeking information. Even without the clips they are both awesome knives. Still very tight with positive lock-up.

If Kristi would activate my registration over at Spyderco for their forum (been waiting two weeks), I could probably get more answers/information as to this question.

Yes they have failed for some that is why they changed the design. Spyderco will probably honor their warranty. Per their warranty page Clips and clip screws- sheared off screws or broken FRN integral clips (can only be replaced with metal clips). .

It may surprise you but I don't want them fixed. They work just as well without the clips and as I said they actually ride in my pockets better than they did when they had the clips. Besides, they're 18-years old and have been used pretty hard at times. I feel it would be taking advantage of Spyderco's warranty policy to send them in and ask for a free repair. Now, if they could have a more modern clip installed on them, I might look into that but would have it done at my expense.

I just hate it when people use and abuse a product until it breaks and then send it in because it broke. Just my .02¢

Wow!!!! That looks darn good. I may just have that done to mine but I'll have to think about it. If I do get it done though, I'll pay Spyderco to do it.

I'm curious as to what more information you would want. You don't want to replace your knives. You're happy without the clips. Integral clips are almost extinct, which pretty much says it all. What more is there to know?

The only integral clip left is the Dragonfly, and that's probably less susceptible to failure because of its small size. What I like about that clip style is that it removes the need for a metal liner, giving you a very light knife. I have heard complaints like yours about integral clips, and personally find them ugly :) the only reason why I don't have a Dfly yet.

Read the first part of that sentence about 5-times and you'll get what I was really getting at.

You really should get an Endura-4. It'd be a nice upgrade from your beloved tools.

I picked up an Endura and a Delica of that vintage at a gun show several years ago as factory seconds with broken clips smoothed down. I carry them often "deep pocket" in places where a clip might get unwanted attention.

Yes the plastic clips wore out when you used them. They got "worn" like car tires wear out when you ride on them. They were plastic, and plastic is not as resilient against bending as metal. Now they have metal ones. The metal clips stay tight much longer. But the paint wears off.
