Just a heads up, this has now infected my laptop and desktop workstation at work, and both machines were virus protected.

Recommend upgrading to Flash 10.1 as the threat uses a security loop hole in that plug-in to execute.

I don't know everything about it, but it has happened to me twice now. Just trying to pass the word along. The "threat" will act like it is an anti-virus program and refuse to allow you access to web pages, redirecting to spam instead, and will not allow your local programs to run or execute smoothly, folders are also all marked as threats and are prevented from opening.

I hope this is ok to post here.

I got hit by it too, ughhh :( I hate reformatting so I took up the task of fixing the problem rather than wiping and starting anew. I've gotten my system back up and running normally except now I get a random pop up every few hours... Still trying to track down and fix that lil bugger.

AV: Nada - I'm one of those ballsy (lazy) types who don't run with AV

Version: Dunno, old.

Gotten: Uh, lets just say I was looking for video games which were most economically sound for my wallet :p

You really should get some Antivirus.
Free ones such as Avast or Avg are better than nothing at all.
If you run without it you just become a harbor for viruses and spyware, and you may not even know you have them, but everyone you send an email and such to stands the chance of becoming infected because of your laziness.

I think it got me too. My computer crashed seven times in a row and every time I restarted an antivirus program I've never seen, viruspro or some such thing, popped up and crashed it again. I booted up in Safe Mode and ran a system restore to yesterday after a full antivirus scan, it hasn't crashed yet, but I'm running another full scan just to make sure I got it.

definately...go get Avast! anti-virus. It's a free program, and is really good.

as for the video game thing; don't download stuff from the "video game website". Any true upgrade/software version issue will take you to the web page of the software itself for you to download whatever it may be. (i hope that makes sense to you.)

+1.

I run OS X and haven't noticed a virus issue in ten years. :D

My Linux servers don't know what you're talking about either. :D

My desktop at home is linux, So I still had a functional computer :D

Here's the description of the one I got from the Microsfot Security Center web page.
Luckily, I think that the system restore and second scan got rid of it.

These things can hide in system restore and become active at a later date.
Proper procedure is to turn off system restore and then scan your computer.
Do scans with your preferred antivirus and also malwarebytes free edition and when both scans find nothing, then turn you system restore back on.

I restored my system to its factory settings and reformatted the hard drive. I couldn't get rid of it with a virus scanner.
