Just wanted to let you guys know that as of today my company in their wisdom is screening access to "inapprorpiate" sites. So far that has included most sites with the word "knife" in it. So I just went thru my favorites list and tried a dozen or so.

It choked on Bark River, 888knivesRus, knifeware, Cold Steel, the knife network, Nordicknives, Randall knives and a bunch of others. So far it does not have a problem with this one, but I think it's just a matter of time. Idiots. (It still likes Chris Reeve knives and some other overt "knife" sites as well, including Quickknife and Knife center of the Internet.) They said they will regularly be adding more sites that are "offensive and inappropriate", so I'm sure more of those sites will be restricted. Honestly I think my sometimes visits to knifeforums will go first and then maybe this one. Like any regulation it's only going to get worse.

I got to work at 8:30 am. and am still here, so I hate it that they regulate our access. I am not diddling on the forums all day. Unfortunately I can't say anything to draw attention that I am on it at _all_!

Can't wait to try some of the gun sites...

Anyway, if I disappear you'll know why! MY DOTD fix will be a thing of the past though...

P.S. Colt, Ruger, Glock, Sig, H&K, S&W, all blocked. Even Brownells. A$$hles!

Also it HATES Himalayan-Imports. So I get here but it won't let me into the HI site. That one bothers me. It's not smart enough to track "khukuris" at least I didn't think so, and I can get to KH and NKH, so why the HI site? Another reason to get shut of this place!

I'll just leave "early" and go home if I have to. I usually stay late and run reports and do backups and check this site while that's going on, and check periodically during the day, but if I can't do that I'll just work my 7.5 and head home.

Umm... well, might not be a great time for it, but Congratulations on going Platinum, Norm.

now... There used to be a site called "anonymizer.com" where you could hit IP's from a third party... try something like that. You go out, then back in. Might work.

As I said on the other forum...the same process dulled my shark teeth a year ago. They use the server records (your actions) to see what sites to lock out/build their blocking list.

Anonymizer was one of the first they locked on us.

They haven't yet figured out that Google often has a cached copy of pages and they work almost as well, especially if you are just killing time:

I'm sorry to hear that Norm. Here is what you do.

1. Learn about proxy servers. There are a bunch. I think thats what Anonymizer.com is. They'll figure that out too eventually but there are so many you may be able to switch around enough to get by em.

2. Find out if your office phone is digital. Hope for analog. One thing I used to do is dial out. They had forgotten to take the dang modem out of the pc. I signed up for a free internet account and just dialed out. No control by the employer! Ha Ha.

3. Nowadays there are WANs all over the place. This one is more complicated and requires you to buy a wireless network card. Get the equipment and sign up for an account and surf through their network.

4. Get a PDA that has wireless connectivity and internet service and surf on it.


Whenever the man cracks down the people get sneakier! You have options. Eff the man.
 
Norm, I spend pretty much all day online. Or at least I will until the weather gets nice then it will be greatly reduced. However, it's rare that I miss a DOTD. I've got a khukdar that almost always gets me to Yangdu's thread within the first 5 views;) I'm just broke, so i don't shark as much as I could. This is a major perk of being the only one in the family that knows a thing about computers;)
However, if you want me to keep an eye out, lemme know the model, weight, size, kami, handle. etc and I'll be happy to snap it up and have it sent to you. It'll be at least 3 weeks before my 'net time gets cut, but even then i usually set my staff doing piddly busy work while i slober and get ready to pounce on the DOTD;)
Just lemme know. The offer is always on the table;)

goes to show chivalry is alive. Here, anyways.

The gov't monitors my (sparing) use of bladeforums at work; they could block it but don't. So I collect knives; so what?

I DID feel funny going to makarov.com, but it was for parts for a CZ pistol.... honest, comrades. Uh, I mean, you guys.

Don't think that I have forgotten about a certain celtic-ish blade, Mike. If several pop up one day and you aren't around, i'll be snagging two. Hey, that's what credit cards are for, right?:) Besides, if you don't want it, I will have NO trouble unloading it one of these other poor shlubs...er gentlemen;)

Back in November, ahem, someone with inside knowledge said they'd be coming.... only 2 have, Sassass's (whew) and Seth's... that I know of.


But there could be 5 in the DotD's today; you never know.

Apologies to the mods for starting this thread on the wrong forum! I could have sworn I was at the Cantina...! Jake, that is damned decent of you and I thank you for it, but if it comes to that (this is day 2 and more sites became inaccessible today), I'll just drop a line to Yangdu for some regular item I just gotta have! and I'm sure she will help me out. I don't expect the bargain DOTD prices in that case but that's a small price to pay for her doing all the work.

This is exactly what I was afraid of Nasty, and now explains why the Himalayan-Imports site is blocked to me. But I wonder how big a step it is to Bladeforums/Manufacturer's Forums/Himalayan Imports Forum?

I'm on my damned lunch break now, and will be until just after 1300 PST. What the hell do they care what I look at? I'm not checking out "hotgeektesterbabes.com" or gambling, so what business is it of theirs? :grumpy: The gun sites really get me! Looking at pictures of my dream custom Colt Python or the new M1A shorty I want is "offensive." Get real...

Andy, thanks for the great info. The phone switch is new and digital, and they check the hard drives weekly for any "unauthorized" software and I'm pretty sure would detect the supporting SW for a wireless card needed for the WAN, but the PDA is a good idea. I have been looking at the new Treo's, the 650 and the 700, and may be able to modify my Sbcglobal ADSL account for a wireless connection? I need to talk to them to get my options.

That would be priceless, plus I could just carry it with me to a nice quiet meeting room and shark away! :D

well, proxy/monitoring/netnanny does bite... and there are ways and ways around it.

at a company i used to work at, your monthly summarized web surfing was available to your managers, every single url, graphs of which ones were hit most, rankings, all kinds of crap. you were ranked in a top 10000 by group, office, corp... anyone above you knows exactly what you looked at. "suspicious" urls were especially highlighted.

the best part, if you made the top 100, you got a special visit to justify why.

fortunately, the company next door had a rather loud wifi, and we all had laptops - many personal. what can you do? ;)

i dunno about those treos... cute, but fast enough for lots of slurping and surfing? dubious...

you could keep your normal good phone, and get a smallish $500 dell with wifi as your personal computer and use that. assuming you can reach an open wireless network :) even if you have to go out to get coffee.

or change your hours to 6am to 3pm :)

ETA: if you get a new phone and appropriate network with EDGE or EVDO and the fancy large screens (like tmobile and the ericcson phones), you can amost surf well, anywhere, and your company can bite themselves :) just get a good data plan. is $50/month too little to spend on sharking? :)

Mine is gov't too...they hire too many smart and attractive security people...wait...that's part of what I do...nevermind.

ps: All digital land lines, building is secured (no wireless will work as it's essentially a giant Faraday box) and the servers are locked down to the file level.
 
Dang Ray they got you locked up tighter than a....
