Internet Bushcraft

i'm sorry, we don't allow batoning on this forum :D

Oh dear, i laughed hard at that one. Was thinking to myself he was quick to pull the pin. Threw the bloody knife down and off he went lol.

It did look like a tough piece of wood but I am of the mind that batoning big wood with knives is kind of like shaving with an ax - it's cool to watch but ...

I thought this was proper internet bushcraft:

Ah, that was quite good.

Although, I can't say I haven't done things very similar (but am now glad I never took video of any attempts :P). Now though, while I do still baton, I no longer try to "pick a fight" with the wood/ I find the piece or two out of everything I've collected that looks easiest to split (if its needed).

But man, that "shooting down a tree" video was worth some laughs. Looks like proper technique is to get closer to the tree.

I am laughing out loud also. Thanks for sharing that. A good laugh on a rainy dreary day does wonders for the spirit!

Just...wow....what is it about big knives that makes people think they are axes? I have never been so desperate for wood (ya, har har) that I was willing to risk breaking my tool or possibly injure myself. "Lost, alone in the woods," is superior to "lost, alone in the woods, now needing a knife and stitches (possibly surgery)." And growing up, I do remember axe shaving competitions during Fur Rendezvous. Those guys are absolutely nuts, but boy can they put an edge on an axe.

Solid technique. The only thing missing was beating the blade out from the edge side.

i was waiting for one of the fools to hit someone, but they got lucky, and didn't crush a truck or dog

I was really expecting that to be a fail video ending with the tree falling in their truck

Ocnlogans advice is right on..... You can expend a crud load of energy turning over large, knotty bolts into blisters and busted blades when the fire you made while exercising a wee bit of restraint, will eat the knotty stuff with no sweat and no blisters...... And do not even think about batonning beech......... Hehehe....
