Compaq Presario Windows XP

Just in case it's happened (or will happen) to you.

Old computer died after six years and I bought a new "home" model of Compaq Presario. BUT every time I tried to use Yahoo, Ebay or certain other sites, I'd get a series of boxes I had to click through: "Internet Explorer Script Error." Sometimes there would be as many as 42 in a row (!!!!) before I got to where I was aiming (like EBay home page). Then more to select any feature on the site or view any e-mail item.

After futile hours with HP/Compaq (They are barely civil.) and some effort to help from Yahoo, I found a reference on Microsoft "Information professional" page (They do not support their software to "just folks") to a defect in Internet Explorer 6.0 that causes these #@$&!!! messages to pop up. I have to think HP/Compaq knew, but they have an "arrangement" with Microsoft.

So I downloaded Netscape (free) and kissed Bill's browser fairwell. Go thou and do likewise.

For future reference:

TOols - Internet OPtions - Advanced - Disable Script Debugging.

It's not a problem with IE, it's a problem with poorly coded sites.

Thanks, but I tried that, as well as: a) deselecting/ disabling "Enable 3d Party Browser Extension"; b) deselecting "Display a notification about every script error"; and c)"destructive restoration" (reformat Drive c and and reload all software from Drive D). The problem ("Internet Explorer Script Error") persisted. Then I spotted the notation about an error in IE Ver. 6 on the Microsoft site, downloaded Netscape, and no more problems. HP/Compaq and Yahoo, collectively, could not (or would not) solve the problem. It's fixed. If the "problem" is with the Java script at EBay, Yahoo, and others, apparently Netscape can cope where Internet Explorer cannot. I only know what I experienced and how I fixed it.

Thanks for posting that information. My computer os getting old and will no doubt have to be replaced before too long. I'll make a note of your fix. Again thanks, I'm not a computer whiz by any means.:) :D

Still running Windows 98 2nd. edition.

Have seen Linux CD's to put in your machine and it makes it run on something they call Lindows without any installation to your hard drive. Anybody know if it's a worthwhile system?

Billy Gates is a half step above the Clintons in my humble opinion. I've used Netscape since it was the #1 Browser. Now on NS7.1, and have Opera installed as back up browser.

It's like the 70's and 80's when Detroit thought they could sell fair quality cars when the imports were about the same price and far higher quality. Gates puts out buggy software and lets the buyers pay for debugging and finding the problems. I hope he sees another competitor take over his market share cause THEY are reliable.

Rusty, I'm with you. The real shame here is that yahoo and HP/Compaq - two companies with 'corporate partnerships" with Bill, are willing to duck and jive instead of telling their customers to dump Internet Explorer. More evidence that Bill has way too much power.
